BBC coverage of digital inclusion in Leeds

Success of the 100% Digital Leeds model for a community-based approach to digital inclusion
December saw the launch of the 100% Digital Leeds model for a community-based approach to digital inclusion to support other councils to apply the 100% Digital Leeds approach in their locality. The model has since been downloaded 89 times and featured in an article by UK Authority celebrating the national recognition of the 100% Digital Leeds programme.

Be Online Stay Safe: media literacy project with Leeds Older People's Forum
Leeds Older People’s Forum and 100% Digital Leeds have successfully received DCMS funding to deliver a partnership project addressing and improving media literacy for older people from diverse communities. Working with four community organisations, the project will overcome the digital inclusion barriers older people in diverse communities face to accessing media literacy, enabling them to positively interact online

Transport Connections: taxi and bus app project with Leeds Older People's Network
100% Digital Leeds and the Leeds Older People’s Digital Inclusion Network have partnered with Leeds Older People’s Forum to deliver Transport Connections, a project supporting older people to use taxi and bus apps and other digital tools that will help them navigate around the city, increasing their independence and improving their access to services.

Embedding digital inclusion into the Student Nurse placement program with Leeds Community Healthcare
100% Digital Leeds has partnered with Leeds Community Healthcare (LCH) and Primary Care to pilot Student Nursing placements with a focus on understanding and supporting digital inclusion for improved digital health, preventative healthcare, and reduced health inequalities.

Creative digital inclusion with adults with learning disabilities at Canal Connections
With support from 100% Digital Leeds and the Autism and Learning Disability Digital Inclusion Network Canal Connections secured NHS funding to support health, well-being, and safe relationships for learning disabled and neurodiverse communities. They have made a video showcasing this work.

Help us better understand how corporate partners can support community organisations with digital inclusion and broader digital development work, through volunteering initiatives.
This 10 minute survey aims to understand demand for volunteering as well as the resources required for managing volunteering offers. The results will help us shape future work with corporate partners.

Partner Profile: Turning Lives Around
Each month we showcase the digital inclusion work of one our our fantastic digital inclusion delivery partners.
Turning Lives Around (TLA) is a charitable organisation that works to prevent homelessness and empower people to believe that they can change their lives and live independently. Over the last three years the organisation has worked with 100% Digital Leeds to embed digital inclusion across their service by:
- providing staff with digital inclusion training
- providing client-access wifi across the service
- reconditioning old staff smartphones to be gifted to clients without devices
- gifting free data, calls, and texts via the National Databank
- addressing eSafety as part of standard needs assessments
As a result of these innovations TLA clients have easier access to services such as health, education, and benefits, the impact of which has been improved independence and wellbeing for clients, and more efficient use of staff time.

Digital skills and connectivity support at Leeds Libraries
Digital Drop-ins take place at libraries and community hubs across the city. Drop by with any questions you might have plus your device, or use a library computer. Free to attend, no need to book in advance. More information including dates, times, and locations.
First Steps With Digital are three-week short courses for absolute beginners. Attendees will learn the basic controls of their device and how to start using the internet. If attendees don't have their own device one can be provided. Free to attend, advance booking essential. More information including dates, times, and locations.
Free data gifting is available for people struggling to afford connectivity. Sim cards with data and unlimited calls and texts (subject to availability) are available at no charge. Drop-in to Leeds Central Library on Wednesday afternoons, 2 - 3.30pm.

Thursdays, 1:30 - 3pm, starting Thursday 2 February for ten weeks at MHA Communities South Leeds. More information.
Free ten week course for older people covering a range of topics depending on what attendees want to learn, such as email and WhatsApp, facetiming friends and family, or utilising transport apps.
Essential digital skills course with Unity
Fridays 9:30am - 2:30pm starting Friday 24 February for seven weeks, term time only, at Unity Business Centre. More information and booking.
Free face-to-face tutor led course covering essential digital skills for life and work. Free to all aged 19+, have leave to remain or indefinite stay in the UK.
Creating animations and GIFs with The Highrise Project
Tuesdays 10am - 12pm, starting Tuesday 31 January for six weeks at Armley Community Hub. More information and booking.
The Highrise Project offers creative digital skills support and mentoring to residents in Armley living in social housing or on a low income. More information about their digital inclusion work, supported by the Leeds Community Foundation Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund.

Funding opportunities
100% Digital Leeds are keen to support the development of any funding bids with a digital inclusion element, or to help you embed digital inclusion throughout your project. If you would like support contact us.
Leeds Housing Advisory Panel (HAP) Funding
Housing Advisory Panels are groups of tenants from a local area who together decide how to spend a budget for community projects. The 11 area-based panels have a total budget of £405,000 to award to projects which benefit tenants and local communities in Leeds.
If your organisation delivers in an locality with council housing, or a percentage of your service users (say 20%) are council housing residents, you can apply for HAP funding. HAPs are keen to support the digital inclusion of tenants and there is an underspend for this financial year. Please speak to us if you're looking to apply.
Amount: not specified but 100% Digital Leeds has found applications of between £5,000 and £10,000 most likely to be successful.
Deadline: rolling, panels meet every eight weeks.

Refugee Support Small Grants Programme
Churches and Christian charities can apply for funding for projects that help refugees arriving in England from Ukraine and Afghanistan. Applications to provide mobile phones and digital devices will be considered.
Amount: £500 to £5,000.
Deadline: Friday 31 March.

The Leeds Fund Strategic Grants
Funding supporting community organisations being able to take time from delivery and undertake strategic development work including unpicking challenges, identifying priority development objectives, and work towards achieving those objectives.
Amount: £30,000 over two years.
Deadline: Friday 17 February, 12 noon.

Smart Energy GB in Communities Fund
The 2023 Smart Energy GB in Communities programme is now live, with grant funding and support being targeted to organisations reaching people in fuel poverty; people lacking basic digital skills; or carers. Grants of up to £25,000 are available for organisations that can deliver support to people in fuel poverty. Grants of up to £15,000 are available for organisations that can deliver support to people lacking basic digital skills. Grants of up to £10,000 are available for organisations supporting carers. The funding aims to make sure people in the three target groups understand how a smart meter could benefit them and increase the likelihood that they will seek and accept a smart meter installation. Deadline for applications: Friday 10 February at 12pm.

Charles Plater Charitable Trust
Grants are available to local not-for-profit groups for projects that deliver tangible outcomes to tackle poverty, exclusion, economic inequality, and environmental concerns for marginalised people and communities.
Amount: £5,001 to £60,000.
Deadline: Friday 17 March, 5pm (current round).

Energy Redress Scheme
Grants are available to charities for supporting energy consumers in vulnerable situations. Examples include engaging vulnerable customers with energy issues and referring them for support, and delivering energy advice and training.
Amount: £20,000 to £300,000.
Deadline: Monday 30 January, 5pm (quarterly)

Household Support Fund Leeds Cost of Living Grants
Grants to support individuals in hardship over winter are available to organisations who support Communities of Interest including cultural diversity, people with mental health difficulties (including Young People), learning disabilities, physical and sensory impairment and older people.
Amount: £1,000 to £5,000
Deadline: Rolling with applications assessed weekly until all funds allocated. All grants must be spent by March 2023.

National Lottery Awards for All
Grants are available for charities, voluntary groups, schools and local authorities to carry out projects that will improve their local community. The fund can be used for utilities and equipment, among other things.
In 2023 the fund can support projects which celebrate the national events that are important to local communities including the Coronation, Eurovision, and the anniversary of Windrush.
Amount: between £300 and £10,000
Deadline: rolling

Digital Inclusion Officer at The Old Fire Station
The Digital Inclusion Officer will be responsible for the development of a sustainable Digital Inclusion support offer in the York Road Local Care Partnership (LCP) area. Based at The Old Fire Station in Gipton and travelling around the LCP area, you will design and deliver workshops and interventions to increase the digital confidence, capacity and capability of local people and organisations. You will work alongside local people, 100% Digital Leeds, third sector and health sector organisations.
Contract: one year fixed term, 37.5 hours per week, usually Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm.
Salary: £25,000 - £28,000 pro rata depending on experience.
Closing date: Sunday 19 February.
