This week we have an update for you on Leeds’ infection rates and a reminder of the current restrictions ahead of the bank holiday weekend.
An update on Leeds’ infection rates
The Leeds 7 day Covid-19 rate is currently 41.4 per 100,000. This is above the national average of 23.9 per 100,000 and we must continue to follow the current guidance to keep infection rates low. The positivity rate this week is 1.9%.
One in three people with coronavirus don’t have any symptoms. This is why regular rapid testing is so important to prevent the spread of the virus. Keep others safe by getting a free test twice a week and getting your vaccine when called.

Staying safe over the bank holiday
Although the gradual easing of restrictions came into effect on 12 April, the actions of every Leeds resident still make a crucial difference to infection rates in our city.
The bank holiday weekend is a great time to catch up with loved ones and friends but it is still important that we all continue to follow the government guidance to keep ourselves and everyone else safe, even if you have had the vaccine. This means:

Washing your hands regularly for 20 seconds

Wearing a face covering, unless exempt

Making space from those you don’t live with

Only meeting people outside, and within the rule of six or two households

Self-isolating if you have Covid-19 symptoms or a positive test result.
Vaccination update
This week marks World Immunisation Week and as of 28th April, over 374,000 people in Leeds have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Over 160,000 of these have now received their second dose.
The first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine should give you good protection from coronavirus, and can cut household transmission by up to half but you need to have a second dose for longer lasting protection. The NHS will contact you when it’s time for your second vaccination appointment – please be sure to attend.

Parks and rubbish
Our parks and green spaces are for everyone to enjoy and they have been used more than ever over the past year. If you are visiting parks and green spaces this bank holiday weekend, please remember to take your rubbish home with you or dispose of it in an appropriate and sensible manner. This will protect not only the parks but also animals and wildlife.

Local elections
On Thursday 6th May, Leeds residents will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at the local elections.
Those using polling stations are being asked to wear a mask and comply with other safety and social distancing measures, including bringing their own pen or pencil and cleaning their hands when entering and leaving the polling station. Only limited numbers will be permitted inside polling stations at any one time, which may mean queues are likely.

Just One Day
Local residents, businesses and organisations are encouraged to come together virtually for ‘Just One Day’ to raise awareness and support for the Lord Mayor’s charity, Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds, on Friday 14th May.
