In case you missed it

An initiative to plant 5,800,000 trees and create new woodlands across Leeds has launched.

The 25-year scheme will allow children, schools and families to get involved with the tree planting process themselves through volunteering. The trees, which are to be planted on council-owned land, will be part of the regional ‘White Rose Forest’ vision. You can read more about the scheme here.

Civic buildings will be connected to low carbon heat and hot water ahead of schedule, thanks to progress over the lockdown period.

Once fully built out, the District Heating Network will help tackle the climate emergency and reduce the city’s carbon footprint by 11,000 tonnes each year. Leeds City Council has also shared plans for a third phase of the scheme which would extend the network into the South Bank and save another 3,000 tonnes of carbon annually. You can find out more here.

World Breastfeeding Week celebrates the environmental benefits of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding has long been recognised as having lasting health benefits to both mothers and their babies, yet its benefits to the environment are less well known. Research suggests that supporting more mums in the UK to breastfeed could save as much carbon as taking 50,000 cars off the road.  Find out more about local support here.
