The Council appoints new Chief Executive
Following the conclusion of a comprehensive recruitment process, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz is pleased to announce, after approval by members at the Full Council on Wednesday 19 July, Abi Gbago (pictured) has been appointed as Newham Council's permanent Chief Executive.
Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said: “I'm really looking forward to working with Abi as she leads Newham Council's 4,500 dedicated officers at a time of great challenge because of the cost-of-living crisis. I also want to thank Colin Ansell, our interim Chief Executive, for his dedication and leadership over the past 14 months. He has won our admiration and respect, and his achievements as our interim Chief Executive has laid down crucial groundwork as we now progress into this next phase of transforming the Council with Abi at the helm."

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Newham Civic Awards!
Our Civic Awards recognises the outstanding efforts of local companies and organisations which have made significant contributions to Newham’s economy through the Community Wealth Builder Award.
There are ten categories this year. Five of these are aimed at individuals, while the others are for organisations and groups.
Our Community Wealth Building strategy represents a pioneering, bold and inclusive economic approach that aims to ensure that investment coming into Newham benefits all residents and creates a fairer and more prosperous borough. Community Wealth Building involves tackling the injustices residents face, such as poverty and inequality linked to race and gender.
Join us in showcasing the inspiring stories of businesses and organisations that are shaping Newham's economic landscape and making a positive social impact. We want to hear from you if you know of a group or organisation which is making Newham’s economy fairer and improving the wellbeing of current residents and future generations.
Award winners and their nominators will be invited to an awards ceremony in December 2023.
Applications close for nominations on Wednesday 30 August.
