Newham’s pioneering Young People’s Charter
Any organisation which has an influence on the lives of people under 25 in Newham can now sign up to the Young People’s Charter.
The charter is a set of eleven principles that matter most to young people: change, creativity, relationships, community, health, diversity, keeping us safe, independence, quality, environment and privacy. All aspects of the charter – including its form, content and appearance – were defined by young people across the borough.
To show that we're listening to and supporting young people, the Council has already committed to upholding the Young People’s Charter and is using it as the basis for our upcoming Children and Young People’s Plan.
Now we want as many organisations as possible – schools, hospitals, charities, large and small businesses – to sign up. This is an opportunity to celebrate some of the amazing work you already do to deliver on these principles, as well as identify areas where you could go further – for instance by protecting the environment around your local business or helping to keep children safe.
Children and young people are 37% of our population and 100% of our future.

Help out with the cost of living crisis
Newham businesses are always supportive of our community and have been especially helpful during the pandemic. Now, due to the cost of living crisis, many are doing some amazing work to support fellow businesses and residents – from providing food supplies for foodbanks to volunteering programmes.
If you're supporting the community or other businesses in any way, please let us know so we can promote the amazing work you are doing so that others can also benefit.
The Council has set up a task force to co-ordinate all the work around the cost of living crisis. If you would like to help it, please let us know. Ways of doing this include:
- providing food for the food banks
- providing free goods and services
- providing free workspace for start-ups or micro businesses
- sharing good practice, hints and tips
- help with budgeting and managing business accounts
- volunteering
- vouchers.
Any help or support is welcome!
Finally, take a look at The cost of living crisis and the cost of doing business: supporting you for helpful tips and hints to overcome some of the impact of rising costs.

New Real Living Wage announcement
Owing to the cost of living crisis the Living Wage Foundation has announced that the new rate for the Real Living Wage will be announced next month, two months earlier than planned and before November’s Living Wage Week.
We encourage all employers to implement the new rate as soon as possible after the announcement; all employees should receive the new rate by 14 May 2023.
The Director of the Living Wage Foundation, Katherine Chapman, said: “The cost of living crisis is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Inflation is at a 40 year high and we know that those who are going to feel this hardest are those earning the least.”

Employment Rights Hub
Newham businesses can access free and confidential support from the Council’s Employment Rights Hub. We are the only local authority in the country that provides this kind of service exclusively for businesses and residents. The Hub can guide businesses, particularly SMEs, who may not have the resources and expertise to understand new and existing guidance on employment rights.
Businesses which have a good understanding of new guidance are more likely to avoid unnecessary disputes and associated costs for unintentionally breaking employment rules and regulations.

New guidance on employment statuses
As an employer it’s important to understand the employment status of those you employ, since it will ultimately determine their level of entitlement to employment rights.
The UK Government has provided new employment status guidance which aims to provide businesses with greater clarity over the responsibilities they will have over their staff and the rights and protections people are entitled to at work, such as pay, leave entitlements and overall working conditions.
