Work starts
on Cycle Superhighway 2
Work on a
substantial upgrade of Cycle Superhighway 2 (CS2) as part of plans by Transport
for London (TfL) to improve cycling safety in the capital is now underway.
The upgrade will
deliver a fully and semi-segregated cycle route between Aldgate and Bow
Roundabout. Eleven cycle-priority junctions will also be installed, including
at Aldgate East, Mile End and Whitechapel.
The vast
majority of the route will be separated with a kerb, which will keep cyclists
away from road traffic. Where there is less space for kerbed segregation,
cyclists will be separated from traffic by regularly spaced flexible poles that clearly define the cycle track.
The work is
due to be completed by Spring 2016.

 Safety first
Cyclists should check out the latest version of the Highway Code, which includes information on how to cycle safely.
For example Highway Code Rule 71 says:
You MUST NOT cross the stop line when the traffic lights
are red. Some junctions have an advanced stop line to enable you to wait and
position yourself ahead of other traffic (see Rule
178).
Check out the Highway Code for cyclists here.

Safer lorry scheme
From Tuesday 1 September, HGVs will need
safeguards to protect cyclists if they want to enter London inside the M25, including travelling through Havering.
Transport for London (TfL) and London Councils
have given the go-ahead for a London-wide ban on any lorry not fitted with
safety equipment to protect cyclists and pedestrians.
The scheme will operate 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, and will be enforced by the police, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and the
joint TfL and DfT-funded Industrial HGV Taskforce (IHTF).
The maximum fine will be £1,000. The operator will also be referred for consideration to the
relevant Traffic Commissioner, who is responsible for the licensing and
regulation of HGV operators.
