Have you got a broken electronic item or
small appliance that could be fixed instead of being thrown away?
Another of our very popular Restart Parties will be held at Romford Baptist Church, Main Road in Romford, (opposite the Town Hall) between 6pm and 9pm on Wednesday 16 November 2016. For more information on this event contact Kathryn@therestartproject.org.
If you’d like to volunteer your repair skills
at a Restart Party then please get in touch – we’re always looking for new
volunteers! If you’re a community group who might be
interested in hosting a future Restart Party please email us.
Don’t
forget that electrical and electronic items that cannot be repaired can be
recycled at our reuse and recycling
centres,
and some items can be collected at the kerbside.
The New Windmill Hall Community Association Community Clean
Up happened on Saturday 22 October – as part of national Make A
Difference Day.
10 volunteers took part on the day weeding the 4 small beds along the
side of the hall and raking all the leaves from the 2 grass areas at the front
of the building and around the perimeter of the building. 30 bags of waste were collected and Streetcare will be
providing the Hall Committee with giant purple crocus blubs to plant in the
front flower and the side hall beds.
A leaf blower was donated to the Committee on the day by a
Committee member to support the maintenance of the exterior. The Committee will now be implementing a monthly gardening programme using volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to support this gardening programme please contact Kim Smith kim.smith@havering.gov.uk or New Windmill Hall 01708 220242.
Trade waste in Romford town centre
Romford town centre enjoys a vigorous day and night time
economy with a significant number of “fast food” outlets where food can be
taken off the premises for consumption. The many litter bins in the area are
used by most people visiting these outlets and the Council’s street cleansing
staff empty these bins and deal with any refuse which ends up on the street .
Havering Council works with “fast food” establishments to
make them aware of their responsibilities to dispose of any waste generated
from their premises. In most cases responsible establishments employ litter
pickers to patrol the streets and remove litter from outside their premises.
Where this doesn’t happen the Council now intends to use new
legislation under the Crime and Policing Act 2014 to serve a warning notice on
the business to remove waste generated from their premises which is causing a
litter problem. Should this not have the desired result a notice
could be issued instructing them to deal with the refuse or face further action including fixed
penalties or even court action.
If Council officers find bagged trade waste on the street outside of collection times this will be inspected and fixed penalty notices
issued if appropriate. Every business must be able to produce waste transfer
notes showing how they dispose of waste generated from within their premises
including fats and oils.

Congratulations to Saint Francis
Hospice who beat hospices across the capital to scoop a gold medal for its patio,
hanging baskets and window boxes and a silver medal in the large gardens
category at the London Gardens Society Awards in October.
This was a step
up on the previous year when the charity won a silver medal and a bronze medal
in the same categories respectively. Claire White, Head Gardener at the hospice (pictured 2nd from left above) said "We will continue to make the gardens an even more relaxing and peaceful space for patients, staff and visitors.”
Transport for London and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, would like your
views on proposals to introduce a new £10 daily Emission Surcharge (also known
as the “T-charge”) in 2017 for vehilces going in to central London. This would be for cars, vans, minibus and heavy
vehicles registered in 2005 and older. This would be in addition to the
Congestion Charge.
Additionally, they would like your views on changes to the
Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), a separate scheme that will replace the
Emissions Surcharge and will have stricter emissions standards for vehicles.
These changes include:
- Introducing a central London ULEZ in 2019 rather than 2020
- Extending the zone up to the North and South Circular in 2019 or later
- Extending the zone London-wide for heavy vehicles only in 2019 or later
To find out more and have your say, visit tfl.gov.uk/airquality-consultation.
The consultation ends on Sunday 18 December.
