Join the Restart party in Romford

Restart Aug 2016

Have you got a broken electronic item or small appliance that could be fixed instead of being thrown away?

A Restart Party will be held at Romford Baptist Church, Main Road in Romford, (opposite the Town Hall) between 6pm and 9pm on Wednesday 16 November 2016. For more information on this event contact Kathryn@therestartproject.org.

Don’t forget that electrical and electronic items that cannot be repaired can be recycled at our reuse and recycling centres, and some items can be collected at the kerbside.

Havering smashes the London in Bloom Competition winning the most awards

London in Bloom is the annual awards that recognises every entrant’s efforts in improving their local environment, and this year, Havering surpassed all expectations by beating its record of 47 awards in 2015.

Among the 55 awards won by Havering, the most achieved by any London borough, was Harold Hill's Central Park. It was deservedly awarded Gold in the Large Park of the Year category.

Romford Station works

Improvement works start around Romford Station

Work to improve access to Romford station and make the area around it cleaner and brighter have begun. Better lighting, signage, tree planting, bins and seating, and the creation of a larger pedestrian plaza to accommodate the increasing number of people using the station and better pedestrian crossings in South Street and Eastern Road are part of the work that will continue until 25 November and then resume following a break for the festive season. Gidea Park and Harold Wood stations will also benefit from investment next year as part of the preparations for the new Elizabeth line train service. Havering residents will soon be able to travel on brand new trains and enjoy direct access to central London and Heathrow airport.

And finally...

We received a call from a resident asking what is done with the beautiful hanging baskets across the borough once they die off. The good news is that we have a company who maintain the baskets and they collect the baskets later this month and regenerate them for use next year.

Havering Green Points logo

Have you registered for the Havering residents reward scheme ?

You can sign up free of charge for the Havering Green Points scheme and earn rewards for reducing, reusing and recycling.

Green Points are allocated to each Havering Green Points member every three months and is based on the area that you live in and the amount of rubbish and recycling that you produce. Each of the nine communities in Havering have their rubbish and recycling collected separately, so we can track when each community is recycling more and wasting less. When rubbish is going down and recycling going up, everyone in your community earns Green Points! Your Green Points can then be turned into rewards or donated to a local charity registered to the scheme .

By joining the scheme you will also get a ‘Green Points – Havering’ card which will get you discounts and offers at over 100 local businesses. You can also earn Green Points for attending special waste minimisation events and activities.

It’s easy to join and it’s all free, all you have to do is visit www.localgreenpoints.com/havering or call 020 7326 5055, so sign up now and start earning your Green Points.

Waste less food & save money

Nearly half of black sack rubbish in Havering is food waste. This literally wastes £6m a year of council tax payer money that could be used to keep the borough cleaner. Together we can reduce the amount of food waste. It is estimated that the average family can save up to £60 each month by reducing household food waste. It is easy to do, by just changing a few habits and using the key tips from this campaign you will notice the difference to your bin and your pocket. For tips and ideas on how to reduce your household food waste plus a huge selection of recipes for using up foods in your fridge and cupboards go to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com.  And don't forget to get composting if you aren't already!
