Heaton Ward councillor resigns

Following the resignation of Philip Hyde, independent councillor for Heaton ward, the Returning Officer and Chief Executive, Cheryl Coppell, has announced notice of a casual vacancy.

What now?

Two local government electors will need to request a by-election in writing. This should be emailed or sent to Cheryl Coppell, Proper Officer. Town Hall, Main Road, Romford,RM1 3BD.

Harold Hill Library progress

Work is still progressing on the new Harold Hill Library in the Hilldene Shopping Centre ready for opening this summer.

The roof is now completed and skylights are in place.

As work continues more deliveries are expected on site which may cause some disruption.

Volunteers needed

Tapestry is looking for volunteers from Harold Hill to help at Paines Brook Court, a day centre that caters for the needs of frailer adults and those with dementia. Guests at the day centre enjoy a friendly chat, a freshly cooked meal in good company and a host of stimulating activities.

World’s Biggest Swim

Central Park Leisure Centre, Harold Hill, is taking part in the World’s Biggest Swim from Friday 18 March to Sunday 20 March to raise money for Sports Relief.

Free swimming

Children aged under eight-years-old will be able to swim for free at Central Park Leisure Centre, Harold Hill as everyone Active extends its swimming offer until October 2016.

Over 50s free swimming

Everyone Active also offers free swimming for adults aged 50 and above, at specific times throughout the week, which will also be extended until October 2016.

Party for Queen's Birthday

On Sunday 12 June 2016, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 90th birthday. 

Communities across Havering can be part of this national celebration by organising a neighbourhood street party.  Street parties are a great part of British life, and an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate national occasions.

£100 fines to make school parking safer

Broadford Primary School, in Farringdon Avenue, Harold Hill is one of six primary schools in Havering piloting a new initiative to tackle the problem of dangerous parking outside schools.

A key part of the scheme is introducing a Public Space Protection Order under the Crime and Policing Act 2014, enforced by fixed CCTV cameras, with offending motorists fined £100 for each offence, with the threat of criminal prosecution for more offences.

Until the end of March one eastbound lane will be closed as part of the Ardleigh Green Bridge replacement. The footway and verge within the traffic island at the junction of the A127 and Bryant Avenue will also be closed during the same period.

The New Testament Church of God on Briar Road, Harold Hill will be used instead of the Betty Whiting Centre for the Greater London Assembly and Mayor of London elections due to take place on Thursday 5 May. Information about your polling station will be on your poll card. More information.

Each police Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) holds meetings the public can attend and ask questions and get crime prevention advice.

In Harold Hill there are two SNTs - Gooshays and Heaton - and their next meetings are:

Wednesday 30 March - drop-in surgery

The Gooshays SNT also hold regular coffee mornings (pictured) at St George's Church.

Help and advice

The Early Help Service runs drop-in sessions and other activities at two places in Harold Hill -  Chippenham Road Children’s Centre and Community Hub and the Ingrebourne Children’s Centre and Community Hub in Taunton Road.
