Free composting workshop in Upminster

Ever thought about composting? A third of average household rubbish can be composted, so you can make excellent food for your plants while recycling and reducing much of your black sack waste.

Havering’s Recycling Team is offering a free composting workshops on Saturday 9 April, 10am – noon, Thames Chase Forest Centre, Broadfields, Pike Lane, Upminster, RM14 3NS.

Upminster Windmill

Upminster Windmill restoration

Havering Council and the Friends of Upminster Windmill have secured funding to restore the windmill to working order and provide an education and training centre on site.

On Friday 15 April, 11am - noon, there will be a meeting at Upminster Library to update residents about the work.

During the work the windmill will be closed to visitors. Further details of the project are available here.

Havering Nordic Walkers Club is holding a Nordic Ski Fit programme from Saturday 9 January until Saturday 13 February. The club also holds monthly ‘Learn to Nordic Walk’ sessions at Thames Chase Community Forest Visitors’ Centre in Pike Lane, Upminster. Regular Workout Walks, Ski Fit and Sunday Walkout sessions are also held. Book a place now.

Party for Queen's Birthday

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 90th birthday on Sunday 12 June 2016,

Communities across Havering can be part of this national celebration by organising a neighbourhood street party. Street parties are a great part of British life and an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate national occasions. The application deadline is Friday 29 April.

Two meetings to discuss safer parking at Engayne and James Oglethorpe Schools

Engayne Primary School and James Oglethorpe Primary School in Upminster, are among six primary schools in Havering piloting a new initiative to tackle the problem of dangerous parking outside schools.

Residents can find out more at two meetings being held at each school on:

Engayne Primary School, Tuesday 19 April, 4pm - 6pm, Parents Drop In Session.

6pm - 8pm, Residents’ Drop In Session.

James Oglethorpe Primary School, Monday 25 April, 4pm - 7pm, Residents’ Drop In Session.

Tuesday 26 April, 4pm - 7pm, Parents Drop In Session.

A key part of the scheme is introducing a Public Space Protection Order under the Crime and Policing Act 2014, enforced by fixed CCTV cameras, with offending motorists fined £100 for each offence, with the threat of criminal prosecution for repeat offences.
