The Harlequins put on a great show as usual at Gidea Park
Library. The
theme this year was Food and Drink and we had a full house of Poetry and Prose
enthusiasts who came along to enjoy the evening’s entertainment.
With amusing recitations and dramatic acting, everyone had a
thoroughly good time watching the show.
We had a Food and Drink quiz, with the quiz master wearing a Turkey on
his head (don’t ask) and the evening ending with a volley of limericks that
gave everyone a chuckle.
Many thanks again to
the Harlequins for putting so much time and effort into their performance and
supporting the library service for another year.

The new library in Harold Hill is really taking shape, with the steel frame of the new building now completed. Read the full story.
We are absolutely
delighted with the results of this year's Summer Reading Challenge. Once
again there was a tremendous uptake from the children
in Havering and we had the highest completion rate in London.
We hope that the teachers in local
schools were able to see the benefits from so many children continuing their
reading during the summer holidays.
The children couldn’t have done this
without the help and support from our wonderful volunteers and staff, their
mums, dads and carers and the schools.
How great it is that we are all working
together to help foster the love of reading and improve our children’s literacy
levels. Well done everyone.
This fantastic book is now available to borrow from Havering libraries.
Read all about Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends Percy, James,
Edward and Toby. Then download the App and see them pop out of the book and
appear on your smart phone or iPad.
Drive the trains around the different tracks and even fly Harold the
Helicopter around the room. Then capture the moment in a photo to show your
friends. See for yourself and borrow today.
The
Library Service is part of the Havering
Dementia Action Alliance which was developed with council partners to help
organisations and the community support those affected by Dementia.
Libraries
regularly host free ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions, delivered by the Alzheimer’s
Society, which give an insight into dementia and tips on how to create a
more dementia friendly community.
This
year 30 library staff, along with members of the public, have become Dementia
Friends.
All our
libraries have ‘Reading Well Books on Prescription’ collections. These have
been recommended and endorsed by health professionals and include: information
books about dementia for people with dementia or their carers; picture books that can be shared with people
with dementia and at least one of the books is a picture book that can be
shared with a child about a family member and dementia. All are available to borrow from our
libraries.

Every library in Havering has computers available for free use by the public, as well as free WiFi access. Just call in to your nearest library to find out more.

Three collections donated
The Local
Studies and Family History Centre have been lucky enough to have recently been
donated several collections of wonderful local material. Work has started already to digitise and catalogue these
collections.

This
picture of the village shop at Havering-atte-Bower is from the Freda Rhodes
Collection, which includes a unique set of glass plate photographs. |

We
also received a fantastic album of more than 300 postcards collected by the late Eric St Anthony Todd. These include a number of rarer views of the
town, such as this view of The Lamb in Romford Market place dating from around 1906. |
|
|
Another
interesting collection of more than 100 images of Havering came to us via the
family of Kenneth D. Ruthve. Shown here is The
Old Post Office, Corbets Tey Road, Upminster in 1906. |
Award for library excellence
The
Council has retained its Customer Service Excellence Award by SGS, the world's
leading inspection body, for its library service. It first received the
certification in 2013.
Head of Culture and Leisure, Simon Parkinson, said: “This
is a great achievement by our library service staff who have continued to meet
the high standards required by the assessors despite the changes and challenges
they have faced.”
