Havering Council is running free composting workshops for Havering residents to get advice and discover the benefits of composting on the following date:

Fly-tipping near trees costs

Harold Hill man £612

Mr Trevor Dawson, of Barnstaple Road, Harold Hill, who dumped several black bags of domestic waste by trees near his home, ended up paying £612 for fly-tipping.

Mr Dawson admitted the offence and accepted a Fixed Penalty Notice of £50, which he subsequently failed to pay. On Friday 21 August, at Barkingside Magistrates Court, he was fined £150, with £442 costs and a £20 victim surcharge, which totalled £612.

The next free electrical repair workshop will be on Wednesday 7 October, 2pm to 4.30pm at The Salvation Army Hall, Petersfield Road, Harold Hill, RM3 9PH. If you have a broken small electrical item bring it along to see if it can be fixed.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Havering Adult College is offering this one day course to enable learners to achieve this Level 2 qualification. The next course will be held on Wednesday 28 October, 9:15am – 5pm at the Bower Park Centre. The cost of the course is £62. Enquire about enrolment here.

Each police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) holds meetings where the public can attend and ask questions and get crime prevention advice.

In Harold Hill there are two SNTs - Gooshays and Heaton - and their next meetings are:

Tuesday 29 September - drop in surgery

Wednesday 30 September - drop in surgery

Thursday 8 October - drop in surgery

Thursday 15 October - drop in surgery

The Gooshays SNT also hold regular coffee mornings (pictured) at St George's Church.

Top marks for Harold Hill parks

Harold Hill flower power has helped Havering win the top award in the London in Bloom 2015 competition with four awards being won in the town.

Local areas which gained awards were:

Central Park,which won gold in the Large Park of the Year category

Dagnam Park, which won silver gilt in the Country Park of the Year category

Bedfords Park,which won gold in both the Large Conservation Area and Country Park of the Year categories.

Havering won 47 of the 193 awards available across London and will now represent the capital in the Britain in Bloom 2016 competition.

Harold Hill Foodbank will benefit when Romford Salvation Army holds a Charity Concert at The Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch from 2pm to 4.30pm on Wednesday 14 October.

Major James Williams is compering the event with guest artistes Joni Talks and William Byrne.

Tickets cost £10, from the Queens Theatre Box Office, with profits supporting the Harold Hill Foodbank.

Local author Dot May Dunn is the guest speaker at this month’s meeting for over 50s.  Dot has written books about her time as a midwife and her childhood growing up in Derbyshire during the Second World War.
