Removal of lamp posts

Grade II listed lamp columns return to Tottenham Court Road

Between the 23rd and 25th June we will be reinstalling the Grade II listed lamp columns on to Tottenham Court Road in the area by Heals/ Habitat.

The columns have been fully restored and once installed will have a final coat of protective paint applied.

As the very first electric street lighting anywhere in London we are excited to have these return to Tottenham Court Road.

Installing the lamp columns

The Grade II listed lamp columns are being reinstalled between the 23rd and 25th June 8am - 6pm.

In order to work safely we will be closing Tottenham Court Road southbound to all traffic (buses and cyclists) from Torrington Place. Cyclists will be diverted and signed to re-join Tottenham Court Road south via Bayley Street. Buses will be diverted via the length of Gower Street and the following bus stops on Tottenham Court Road will be closed:

  • All southbound bus stops
  • Northbound bus stop outside the American Church

The southbound lane will reopen outside of these working hours.

The taxi rank outside Habitat will also be closed throughout these dates.

Northbound traffic on Tottenham Court Road will be unaffected, although delays may occur when we install the lamp columns on the northbound lane. At this point traffic will be able to use the southbound lane to travel north.

Thank you for your patience while we undertake this necessary work.
