Improvements to the cycle lane on Tottenham Court Road
Thank you for your patience while we made changes to improve how the lane operated. This has included working with Transport for London (TfL) to remove the cyclist push button and replace this with a sensor which recognises approaching bikes and automatically changes the lights.
We have also made changes to the layout of the cycle lane to make it easier for cyclists to use.
Trialing the cycle lane
We have run two trial openings of the segregated cycle lane and although it has been fully approved by the independent safety auditors, we were uncomfortable with the number of cyclists not using the lane correctly.
You might have seen us working alongside a compliance team from TfL to provide an onsite presence who warned cyclists of the danger of ignoring red signals. We will continue to work with TfL to try and educate those cyclists who run the red lights.
Closing the cycle lane
We take safety very seriously and remain concerned about the safety of those cyclists ignoring the red signals.
During the trial, the number of cyclists who ignored the red signals and put themselves at risk of traffic turning into Howland Street remained high.
As a result in we have taken the difficult decision to keep the cycle lane closed until the full traffic restrictions on Tottenham Court Road are in place later this year.
News on the cycle lane will continue to be updated on our website.
