The West End Project's Green Credentials

June 2018

Clean Air Day

Sustainability at the heart of Camden's West End Project

Today is national Clean Air Day and as part of that we are sharing the different ways the West End Project is working sustainably, as well as bringing improvements in air quality locally.

Eurovia compound on Alfred Place

Making environmentally friendly choices

Our contractor Eurovia is committed to delivering the West End Project sustainably.

The storage compound on Alfred Place allows us to reduce the number of deliveries to and from the site as we are able to store larger quantities of material.

All Eurovia's vehicles meet the Ultra-Low emission standard and we are exploring the latest in green technology. We are currently refurbishing a hydrogen generator to power some of the equipment and are investigating other exciting options for green power.

We hope to be able to share more news on that soon.

Green Spaces

The West End Project is providing new green and public spaces across the area. These include Alfred Place which will become a new park, Princes Circus which will be transformed into a new public space and the rejuvenation of Whitfield Gardens.

Pocket parks along Tottenham Court Road at Capper Street, Bedford Avenue and Bailey Street along with a new public space on Huntley Street will provide new places to take a break as well as improving local air quality.

Where we can we are planting new trees including in the new plaza at Centre Point. We'll be sharing the designs for some of the green spaces in our next newsletter so watch this space!

UPDATE: We have updated some of the final scheme maps on our project website

Boosting air quality locally

We have installed Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) diffusion tubes across the project area to monitor the changes in air quality. NO2 is known to be harmful to health and so monitoring local levels is an important part of understanding the benefits the project is set to bring. We will also be carrying out other data collection, such as traffic counts, to monitor air quality locally.

An independent study has suggested that the West End Project is set to bring significant beneficial change and improvements in terms of air quality so we will be continuing to monitor the situation as the scheme progresses.
