Message from our Corporate Director

Carmel_Littleton

I really hope you were able to take some time off over Christmas, even if you weren't able to do many of the things you normally would. And with us now being in another lockdown, it is still a very challenging time for all of us.

January was a challenging month for many and sadly lsat week we lost 15 year old Romario Opia, who was tragically murdered in Archway. I want to pay tribute to the professionalism and care with which our staff have responded to this tragic incident. So many of our colleagues in TYS, YOS, CSC and education have had some part to play in following up this tragic event and have done so sensitively and professionally. For those of you impacted by Romario's death please do speak with your manager to make sure you are getting support for your own wellbeing.

I have also asked all managers to remind staff to take plan and take leave. The current lockdown is challenging everyone's health and wellbeing and I want to ensure you all take a well-deserved break.

We know that there is light is at the end of the tunnel and we're making some excellent progress on delivering the vaccine to Islington's residents and staff. I'm delighted that all of our older residents and staff in older people's care homes have now had the opportunity to get the first vaccination. It’s an incredible achievement and I wanted to thank particularly Russell Jones and Iride Polo Alvarez in Adult Social Care who have worked tirelessly to achieve this. I also wanted to give particular thanks to Candy Holder who has done so much to ensure our special school staff have been able to take up their vaccination and Anthony Doudle who has worked tirelessly with school staff to support them with easier access to get a test.

We know that the roll out of the vaccine is one of the major ways out of the pandemic, but we must also all keep playing our part in keeping each other safe. Please do continue to work from home if you can and it has been agreed with your manager, and if you do have to work on-site, please remember to follow the Covid safety guidance, and most importantly, follow our guidelines on what to do if you develop any symptoms.

In other news, Mark Taylor, Director of Learning and Schools, retired last week. Mark has spent the last 40 years in education, with 20 of them in Islington. He has been a real supporter of schools and education settings across the borough, and a lead player in developing the Islington Community of Schools. I will miss Mark enormously but I know you'll all join me in wishing him well in his retirement. Mark leaves behind the legacy of a very strong and committed team and they will be carrying on and redoubling our efforts to achieve great educational outcomes for all our children.

A quick update on the SLT restructure - the consultation has now ended and a further update was circulated to all affected staff last week. Thank you to everyone who engaged in the process and fed back their comments and ideas. Launching a consultation process of this nature is never easy and I and the rest of CMB are really grateful for your professionalism and commitment. Please do contact me or your manager if you have any outstanding queries.

This month is LGBT+ History Month and there are plenty ways to brighten up your month and come together virtually in celebration.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that Cllr Kaya Comer Schwartz has now gone on maternity leave and Cllr Michelline Ngongo is the new Executive Member for Children, Young People and Families while Cllr Comer Schwartz is away, with Cllr Una O'Halloran taking responsibility for Mother Tongue Supplementary Schools. I am delighted also to let you know that shortly after going on maternity leave, Kaya gave birth to a beautiful baby, Ari Ezra. Congratulations to Kaya and her family.

LGBT+ History Month 2021

LGBT+ History Month

February is LGBT+ History Month and this year the need to come together and celebrate is even more important as many of us are spending time away from friends and loved ones.

At least 6% of our staff are Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual and LGBTQ+ staff make a major contribution to Islington. That’s why we’re proud to be a Stonewall Diversity Champion and will be flying the Rainbow flag above the Town Hall throughout February.

We're committed to making Islington Council a better place to work for our LGBTQ+ staff through the Challenging Inequality programme, and there are plenty of ways you can be part of the change this month, as well as come together virtually in celebration.

An update on the vaccine roll-out

We're working closely with the NHS and other local partners to ensure the smooth roll-out of the Covid vaccine across Islington, including getting sites set up across the borough.

The vaccine has now been rolled out to all of our older residents and staff in care homes as a priority group; a tremendous achievement managed by Russell Jones and the teams over the past few weeks.

Watch this great video from Lennox House staff on their vaccine experience.

Mark Taylor

Update from Mark Taylor

Mark Taylor, Director of Learning and Schools, will be retiring on 28 January.

Mark says: "I have made the difficult  decision to retire from local government service.  It has been 40 years in education to date ,including the last 20 years in Islington. I wish to thank you all for your support and for your unwavering commitment to the children and  young people of Islington. I’m very proud and honoured to have worked alongside you for so long."

Partnerships and Service Support

COVID Winter Grant

Islington received additional funding from government to help support the most vulnerable residents in Islington during the winter months.

Getting the funding out to best support our residents through the winter period has involved working with teams across the council. Please contact Alison Cramer or Matthew Beevor if you would like any more information on the support available through the scheme.

Initial outcomes include delivering supermarket vouchers to all families with children aged 0-4 years and not yet at school, who are in receipt of council tax support or housing benefit. These started to land on door mats last week.

New Head of Service, Strategy, Commissioning and Policy

Congratulations to Angela Elliott who has taken up post as the new Head of Service, Strategy, Commissioning and Policy. Angela has a wealth of experience and has programme managed a substantial amount of projects for Islington since 2012.

She has been the Service Manager for the Placements Commissioning Service for the last five years or so and is well known in the placement sector nationally for her responsiveness, dedication and innovation. We look forward to her influence and contribution to the Senior Leadership Team.

Farewell also to Ruth Beecher, who has been covering the post of Head of Early Help and Strategy and Policy since May 2020 and who came back to Islington having asked for a sabbatical from her research to help with delivering Early Help services during the pandemic. The Bright Start 5-19 service has loved having her back in the driving seat as have the management team. However her research is calling her. Thanks to Ruth for all her work and contribution - she will be sorely missed.

Somali community event

Somali Employment Event

Just before Christmas, Islington hosted a jobs fair for young people aged 16-25 who live in Islington and who are of Somali heritage. This was an online session and shared information about jobs and training including working for the Metropolitan Police, information on apprenticeships, and a live Q&A with apprentices and how to access further employment support. The community have had a very difficult year – being a group more at risk of COVID-19 and having two young adults killed this summer – and this was one of the objectives in our new Somali action plan which is designed to support the community. Thanks to the YEP team and to Raj Jalota, Ghebi Ghile and other TYS staff for helping to arrange this.
