In response to schools changing needs this year, we have updated the structure of meetings to be more flexible to what you may need. Please feel free to attend in a way that suits your schedule, and our team is always available to have 1:1 conversations to discuss your schools specific needs. If that is of interest, please contact us to arrange a time.

Cultural Lead Partnership Project

Aim of the project

1. To develop a partnership with an Islington Arts Organisation
2. To work collaboratively with an Arts Organisation to develop a digital activity or resource which can be used by your school and shared with schools in Islington

Project outline

  1. Identify an arts organisation (or art form) that you would like to partner with
  2. Identify possible outcomes you would like to achieve (A resource, digital assembly, a meet the artist, etc.)
  3. Online meeting with the arts organisation + artist
  4. Trial resource or activity
  5. Feedback and refine
  6. Share and celebrate

Cultural Spotlight Events

These are focused events dealing with areas identified by you over the last year as areas you would like further support in. We will be announcing more topics throughout the terms and will update you regularly.

Autumn Spotlight sessions:

  • Mapping and Auditing the Arts in your school (Thursday 22 October 2020) 
    Strengthening your role; reflecting on the  role of the arts in your school at this time
  • Fundraising (Autumn 2 - date tbc)
    where to look for funding and tips for completing a funding bid 

Creative Bitesize Meetings (Termly)

These general update meetings will be a chance for Cultural Lead teachers to come together and share practice as well as hear about recent developments in and beyond 11 by 11.

Features of these meetings will include:

  • Signposting to new resources and activities available
  • Summary of creative spotlights and CPD sessions
  • Cultural Leads bring a successful resource/lesson plan/activity (led by you)

We will share the next Bitesize meeting date as it is confirmed.


Artsmark Islington Group

This Group will bring together Cultural Leads at varying stages of their Artsmark Journey, for support and advice from A New Direction. This will include an online group development day for Leads and a member of their SLT in Autumn term, and meetings to help set goals and understand the process of achieving an Artsmark Award.

Cultural Leads Spotlight: 
Mapping & Auditing the Arts in your school 

Thursday 22 October, 3.45-5pm: Zoom

Following our Welcome Introduction Twilight on 28 of September, we are delighted to continue our meeting and training series with our first Spotlight, Mapping and Auditing the Arts in Your School

This session is open to all Cultural Lead Teachers. However, it is particularly relevant for new Cultural Lead Teachers who want to understand how to develop their role and for Cultural Lead Teachers who want to be part of the partnership project this year.

Aims of the session
1. To discuss creative and cultural strengths and areas of development in school
2. To identify action plan priorities for this academic year
3. To explore ideas for partnership working

Teachers will also have time to discuss priorities and share ideas with each other as part of the session.

FREE: Live performance Far, Far Away with Aurora Orchestra at Kings Place (Primary EYFS/KS1)

Far, Far Away at Aurora Orchestra

Nursery, Reception and Year 1 bubbles of up to 60 children are invited to Aurora Orchestra in Kings Place, N1 9AG, for a socially distanced performance on 27 November 2020.

Far, Far Away is designed for very young children as a chance to give them their first experience of live music in a playful, multi-sensory approach to concert presentation.

Each concert explores a particular composer or style of music, weaving together stunning live performances with an original story and a beautifully designed set built around the audience and musicians. Audiences are invited to step inside each performance, becoming immersed in a magical world of music, language, discovery and play.

Spaces for the day's performances are limited due to social distancing. Click the link below to register your interest by Fri 23 October. Each bubble of 60 can be accompanied by a maximum of 20 adults.

FREE: Get Crafty! Art Competition (Secondary)

Mary Wollstonecraft Art Competition for Islington Secondary Schools

Get Crafty Competition

New Unity and Newington Green Meeting House are working alongside the Hackney Museum to run the Get Crafty! Mary Wollstonecraft Art Competition to celebrate the life and work of Mary Wollstonecraft, Britain’s first feminist and famous local resident.

Secondary school students in Hackney and Islington can enter the competition by creating a piece of art inspired by Mary’s story and her time at Newington Green. Ten entries will be selected and displayed at Newington Green Meeting House in 2021. The winner will also receive a £150 art supplies voucher courtesy of the Wollstonecraft Society, and their artwork will go on permanent display in the Meeting House.

Deadline to submit art work is Monday 14 December 2020

Self Guided Visits, Creative Workshops and Resources

Modern Italian Art Pattern

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art education programme is offering Islington Schools a variety of inclusive learning opportunities, suitable from both Primary and Secondary Schools:

FREE Self-Guided Visits Visit our exhibitions when we're closed to the public to help maintain your 'bubbles'. Activity resources are available support your visit. 

FREE Creative Workshops A limited amount of free workshops for Islington Schools as part of our Italian Threads: MITA Textile Design 1926 - 1976 exhibition. These are up to 2hrs long and can take place on a Monday or Tuesday when we're closed to the public.

FREE School and Family Art Activities Resources Download free activity resources here suitable for class or at home

Online Talks Online 30 minute talks followed by a Q&A session focusing on 'Introducing the Estorick Collection', 'Futurism' and 'Working in a museum'. Sessions can be tailored to meet your subject needs and interests. Please note a £30 fee is attached to these Online Talks.

FREE: Live Workshops with The Liliesleaf Trust UK (KS2,3,4)

Exploring community and justice through Islington’s anti-apartheid legacy.

Penton Street

The Liliesleaf Trust UK is creating a Centre of Memory and Learning (CML), within the former headquarters of the African National Congress (ANC) at 28 Penton Street, Islington.

Whilst the CML is being created, The Liliesleaf Trust offer learning opportunities such as talks, assemblies for schools, workshops and downloadable resources. These engage learners with the history of the struggle and its important legacy, one that continues to inspire us to work together to make the world a better place.

Step into Dance (Secondary/SEND)

Step into Dance, a Royal Academy of Dance programme in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation, is back for the 2020/21 school year!

Step in to dance participants dancing

The programme provides secondary schools in London and Essex with weekly, subsidised dance lessons, delivered into your school by professional dancers.

All Step into Dance programs are fully inclusive. They are open to students aged 11 -18 (25 for our SEND students) in schools across London and Essex.
