Waste heat from the Tube to warm homes in world-first

Waste heat from the London Underground is now capable of providing heating and hot water to more than 1,350 homes, a school and two leisure centres in Islington thanks to a pioneering energy centre. 

Launched last week, the revolutionary Bunhill 2 Energy Centre – the first of its kind in the world – provides a blueprint for decarbonising heat in potential future schemes, reducing heating bills and carbon emissions while improving air quality and making cities more self-sufficient in energy.

Coronavirus/COVID-19 advice

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It's caused by a virus called coronavirus.

The UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the public from low to moderate. To protect yourself and others, NHS advice states you should wash your hands more often than usual, for 20 seconds each time with soap and water, or use hand sanitiser. 

You only need to stay away from public places (self-isolate) if advised to by the 111 online coronavirus service or a medical professional.

Cycleway

Work on new Cycleway gets underway

Plans for a greener, more pleasant environment for cycling and walking are being brought to life after work began on a new Cycleway between Finsbury Park and Highbury Fields.

The project, by Islington Council and funded by Transport for London (TfL), will support walking and enable riders of all abilities to jump on the saddle, making it easier to get to work, visit friends and shop in businesses across the borough and beyond.

The Cycleway is due to be completed by the end of the year, and will extend from Horsell Road in the south of the borough to Blackstock Road in the north.

Attend the unveiling of Andrea Levy's heritage plaque

You can attend the unveiling of a heritage plaque in honour of Andrea Levy, who passed away last year. Andrea wrote some of the nation’s most celebrated and influential novels exploring the lives of immigrants and working class people in the UK.

Speaking at the unveiling will be Andrea’s husband Bill Mayblin, Andrea’s childhood friend Baroness Lola Young, and local MPs and councillors.

Date: Saturday 14 March

Time: 2pm – 2.30pm, with a reception at Elizabeth House to follow
