Voting and Election news

12 December 2019

Today you can vote in the General Election, and if you live in St George's ward, you can vote in a local by-election.

Your local polling station

If you live in Islington and are entitled to vote, you should have received your poll card. Your poll card will tell you where you should go to vote. Don’t worry if you don’t have your poll card – you don’t need to take it to be able to vote.

You can also check where you should go to vote by putting your postcode into the polling station finder – just click the green button below and put in your postcode.

Polling stations will be open from 7am – 10pm today. Polling stations are often busiest in the evening, especially between 5pm – 10pm, so if you want to avoid the queues, go to vote early!

Registration to vote in the General Election is now closed.

Have you sent back your postal vote?

Don't worry if you haven’t! You can hand in your postal vote at your polling station anytime between 7am and 10pm today. Find your local polling station here. There is also a ballot box in Islington Town Hall where postal votes can be placed.

Who are the candidates?

Islington Council's job is to run the election – this includes sending out postal votes, setting up the polling stations and counting the votes. We are often asked about the manifestos of each candidate and why these are not on our website. We are not allowed to publish political manifestos. We can only list factual information such as the candidate's name and party.

St George's ward by-election

There’s also a by-election in St George’s ward today to elect a local councillor. If you’re registered to vote in St George’s ward you will be able to vote in the by-election at the same time as the General Election at your local polling station.

Non-British EU residents are not eligible to vote in the General Election, but can vote in the by-election if you live in St George's ward. If this applies to you, and you registered to vote before the deadline, you will have been issued with a poll card for the by-election.

Feel free to take your dog (or any other pet!) along with you to your polling station, but you can only take them inside if polling station staff agree.

However, please do share with us on Twitter your #DogsAtPollingStations pictures as we love to see them!

The results are in!

We will be issuing a bulletin with detailed election results on Friday 13 December. You can also follow live voting information and results as they come in on our Twitter account. But, be warned, you will be in for a late night, as the votes are counted into the small hours of the morning for the General Election! In the case of St George’s by-election we will have the result on Friday afternoon.
