18 November 2019
A parliamentary General Election will take place on Thursday 12 December. In a general election, you can vote for one Member of Parliament (MP) to represent your area (or constituency) in the House of Commons.
If you live in St George's ward, a local by-election will take place on the same day to elect a new councillor following the resignation of Councillor Kat Fletcher. There are no other by-elections in Islington on that day.

Decisions made by MPs affect everyone, so make sure you are registered to vote in the upcoming election. Registering to vote usually takes only five minutes.
To be able to vote in the General Election and the local by-election, you will need to register first at GOV.UK by 11.59pm on Tuesday 26 November. If you have recently changed address, name, or nationality, you will need to register again.
If you have recently added your details to the Household Enquiry Form, this doesn't mean that you are registered to vote, and you will need to register at GOV.UK.
If you have already received your poll card or postal vote, then you are registered to vote.
|
If you registered to vote before 1 November 2019, you should now have received your General Election polling card. If you registered after 1 November, you will receive a polling card soon.
If you want to vote by postal vote in the General Election you will need to apply by 5pm on Tuesday 26 November. You need to be registered to vote first.
Or you can appoint a proxy. Appointing a proxy means someone else will cast your vote for you. They would need to vote at your designated polling station, and your appointed proxy must be registered to vote and also eligible to vote at the election. You can apply for a proxy vote on our website.
We've put all the key dates you need to know below, so you can stay on top of this election:
-
26 November, 5pm: deadline to apply for a new postal vote or change existing postal or proxy vote arrangements
- 26 November, 11.59pm: deadline to register to vote
- 4 December, 5pm: deadline to apply for a new proxy vote
- 12 December, 7am - 10pm: polling day. We recommend that you visit your polling station early to avoid the queues
- 13 December: election results will be declared for the Islington South and Finsbury, and Islington North constituencies. The election result is expected at 4am.
