Islington celebrates record GCSE results

Islington students continued to improve their performance and gain excellent grades in GCSE results revealed last month. The Attainment 8 measure, which shows a pupil's average grade across eight of their best subjects, remains well above the national average. An impressive one in four pupils achieved three or more of the very top grades, 7-9.

Cafe fined for inadequate hygiene standards

Owner of Costa's Coffee, Jose Paulo Costa Fonseca, has been prosecuted for failing to comply with hygiene regulations, with fines and costs amounting to £8,670. During inspections of Costa's Coffee, mice droppings were found throughout the premises including in the kitchen and food preparation areas.

Islington welcomes 100th bike hangar 

Almost 700 Islington residents can now store their bikes safely outside their homes as our roll-out of secure on-street bicycle storage units passes the 100 mark.

The award-winning Bikehangars have proved extremely popular ever since the council announced the pilot scheme in 2016, and there are plans to install another 300 over the next three years. The covered, lockable units each provide rental space for up to six bicycles and take up just a single car parking space on the street.

Last chance to turn your street into a Play Street

On 22 September, you can turn your street into a Play Street for Car Free Day. This internationally-celebrated day sees streets across the world given over to people, not vehicles. You can easily apply to turn your street into a Play Street below. The deadline is 9 September at 4pm.

Have your say on Islington's ward boundaries

Due to population increase, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England has recommended that Islington should have 51 councillors, instead of 48. Those councillors would represent 17 three-councillor wards across the borough. This means a new pattern of wards, and your views are being sought on whether these ward boundaries and the proposed names of the wards are right.

You have until 7 October 2019 to have your say.

Highbury Leisure Centre pool update

Work to restore the swimming pool at Highbury Leisure Centre after last year's fire is in a new phase, including clearing the pool hall of debris and reinforcing the roof. The gym, which reopened 10 weeks after the fire, is open as usual.
