Climate emergency declared

A climate and environment emergency has been declared by the council, alongside a pledge to work towards making Islington net zero carbon by 2030. It comes after the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that the world has until 2030 to avoid an increase in global temperatures above 1.5˚C, which would have devastating impacts on the planet and people’s lives.

Islington Council is at the forefront of action to reduce carbon emissions in the borough, and is on target to reduce carbon emissions in Islington from 2005 levels by at least 40 per cent by 2020.

This commitment to social housing continues today – Islington Council will build more than 550 brand-new, much needed council homes in the borough by 2022. You can read more interesting facts about housing in Islington below.

Holloway Road consultation

Islington Council and Transport for London (TfL) invite residents to have their say on vital safety improvements around Holloway Road. Planned improvements include new, signalised pedestrian crossings, and to simplify existing staggered crossings to straight across crossings at the Hornsey Road/Hornsey Street junction.

The proposed changes are part of TfL's Vision Zero commitment, and work is planned to start in the next 12 months, subject to consultation.
