With some councils holding local elections today and European Parliament elections only three weeks away, here are some questions and answers that you might find helpful if you live in Islington.

Are there local elections today (2 May)?

No, not in Islington. Councillors are elected for a four-year term and we held elections last May. So our next scheduled elections for Islington Council will be in May 2022.

If you want to know which councillors represent the ward you live in, please visit www.islington.gov.uk/councillors

If you’d like to get involved in what happens in Islington, why not come to your next ward partnership meeting? You’ll find details here

When are the European Parliament elections?

The next scheduled elections are due to take place on Thursday 23 May.

I’m a UK citizen, what do I need to know?

If you are a UK citizen registered to vote in Islington we will send you a poll card for this election shortly, you might have already received it. Your poll card tells you where you should go to vote in person on Thursday 23 May.

If you would prefer a postal vote for this election and are not already set up as a postal voter, you need to complete and return your application to vote by post by 5pm on Wednesday 8 May by filling in the form on our website.

I’m a citizen from another EU country, what do I need to know?

We have sent European Parliament voter registration forms to you if you are on the electoral register for Islington. If you want to vote in the UK please return this form to us by midnight on Tuesday 7 May.

If you have opted to vote in a different country, you should not return this form to us.

If you need a replacement form, you can find one on our website

What if I am an EU citizen but not currently registered to vote and would like to take part in the UK European Elections?

You must register to vote by midnight on 7 May.  In addition to registering, you must also complete a European Parliament Voter registration form by this date.  The quickest way to register to vote is online through the government website

Don’t forget to also complete the additional European Parliament Registration form and email it back to us at electoral.services@islington.gov.uk

Who can I vote for in the European Parliament elections?

The list of candidates standing in London can be found on our website as a pdf document, or you can see the list on the BBC website

An elector can vote for one candidate only.

We are sometimes asked if we can provide more information about the candidates and what they stand for. Councils are not allowed to do this. It is up to the candidates or their party to explain and publicise their manifesto policies.

How do I know if I’m registered to vote?

Poll cards were sent to all current registered individuals on 26 April so if you haven’t received yours yet, it will be with you shortly.

If you are unsure please contact our electoral services department electoral.services@islington.gov.uk

You can register any time. But to vote on Thursday 23 May you must register no later than by midnight on 7 May.

How can I find out the results?

All EU countries will count on the same day - Sunday 26 May – so results will be published after 10pm. Keep an eye on media channels for the full results.
