Hull Film makers forum - initial meeting

Wednesday 29 May, 6.30 pm at Artlink

Following discussion at City Arts Forum in April, the City Arts Unit in partnership with Artlink agreed to support local film makers in establishing a Hull Filmakers Forum. Thank you to those who have responded to our call for expressions of interest.

The aim is to esablish a group of local film makers for networking, information and skill sharing, mutual support and with a view to establishing a group that can present a collective face to the major potential funders for film activity.

The idea for this meeting is that it will be the first step to set up a group of people with a common interest in making films, who can support one another and identify common needs. It will be a self sustained group and members will set the agenda.

This first meeting will take place from 6.30 pm, on Wed 29 May at Artlink, 87 Princes Ave., Hull.

Please feel free to extend this invitation to anyone else who might be interested.

Hull Freedom Chorus - recruiting new members for latest projects

Hull Freedom Chorus is a massed choir organised by City Arts Unit, Hull City Councikl.  The group is made up of people from the local area that want to free their voices and celebrate Hull.  Singing a variety of songs in different styles, members get a chance to work with some of the UK's most inspirational singing leaders.

The group has been established to bring singers together, but also to provide opportunities to try new things, and work in new ways.

In 2012 the group sang at Olympic Torch celebration, Hull Jazz Festival, Hull Freedom Festival, Hull Truck's birthday event and had a rousing finale joining the EYMS Brass Band for a Christmas concert at Holy Trinity.

In 2013 the Chorus plans to contribute to a number of high profile events in the City during the year and has a number of projects in the pipeline including:

  • Collaboration with Singing Days at the City Hall - intergenerational project in June singing with children from Primary Schools all over the City
  • Welcoming the World - Anthem recording project, 15 and 16 June.
  • Freedom Festival - 6 and 7 September
  • Youth Arts Festival - forming a Youth Freedom Chorus and coming together with the full chorus for a performance on 2 November

There are also plans in the pipeline to contribute to Hull Jazz Festival and a special Christmas concert in December.

There are no auditions for the Chorus, and we limit time committments by limiting rehearsals to intensive periods and utilising online learning resources. We welcome members over the age of 14, and would like to hear from younger singers in advance of establishing a youth chorus in the Summer.

All you need to do is enjoy singing, want to sing in harmony with a large group, want to be part of celebration events in the City.  For more information or to sign up online or find us on facebook and like our page.

Groundbreaking production for young people with profound learning disabilities comes to Hull Truck Theatre - White Peacock

21 - 25 May

To celebrate its 40th anniversary Roundabout, the pioneering theatre-in-education company of Nottingham Playhouse, is staging one of its most ambitious projects ever.  White Peacock is a groundbreaking play created especially for young people with profound learning disabilities and autism, which will embark on a national tour in late spring 2013. The play is unique in performing inside a specially constructed micro theatre to just six young people and their companions at a time.

White Peacock, which is aimed at 11 – 25 year-olds, tells the eventful story of the last night of Sam’s school holidays. Sam is alone in his moonlit garden; high up in the tree the white peacock is calling, and the scent of rose and lavender hangs heavy in the air. But suddenly his solitude is broken, when a young girl strays into the wild garden thinking that it’s part of the wood. So Sam meets Phoebe, and so their adventure together begins.

Making theatre for very severely disabled young people means offering lots of ways for them to engage. In White Peacock the audience is fully involved through sight, sound, smell, and touch: when they explore the garden with Sam and Phoebe there is real grass to touch and smell, a real pond to dip feet into, a tree to sit underneath, and the scent of flowers to experience.

This show is an hilarious romp through his troubled inner-city Manchester childhood, baring all in his debut stand-up career and lifting the lid on his Catholic upbringing. When gang warfare in Moss Side is the least of your worries compared to sadistic nuns, paedophile priests, and your best mate is the school bully, is there any wonder Terry turned out as he did!?

The Other Space, 94 Alfred Gelder Street, Hull, HU1 2AN

Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.  Please visit the Other Space website for booking information.

A new comedy by renowned young playwright Tom Wells will launch Hull's newest performance venue.  Cosmic, Wells' new work about love, loss and outer space set in Withernsea, will be the first play to be performed at The Other Space, located in a city centre office taken over by theatre company Ensemble 52.

E52's plans for the building include lunchtime and early evening theatre and a large-scale site-specific production later this year. The new venue will also play host to workshops for arts practitioners, be the venue for the recording of a regular arts podcast and serve as an incubator space for emerging companies. E52's new home has been provided by Hull businessman Malcolm Scott.  Cosmic is this year's recipient of the Larkin25 Arts Award, following E52's production of Euphoria in 2012.

E52's Dave Windass said:  “We've got big plans for The Other Space. This will be a different kind of venue. We aim to make it the kind of place where people are never quite certain what they are going to experience. It's a blank canvas in which all manner of performances can take place and we'll be able to find new ways of providing audiences with entertainment.
