HBM4EU - Hexavalent Chromium in Welding and Electroplating

HBM4EU is a research project to coordinate human biomonitoring in Europe. HBM4EU will provide better evidence of the actual exposure of citizens to chemicals and will support future policy making.

HSL is involved in some of the workplace studies that will be conducted during the project.  In 2018 we expect to be studying hexavalent chromium exposures in welding and electroplating using our novel exhaled breath condensate method.
Hexavalent chromium is now authorised under REACH and so demonstration of good exposure control is essential.  If your company is interested in participating in this study, please get in touch.

Nano

Nanomaterials:
new WHO guidelines

Nanotechnologies involve the creation and/or manipulation of materials at the scale of atoms and molecules. New nanotechnologies are being developed rapidly with potential benefits in a wide range of applications.

As with any worker exposed to chemicals, it is important to ensure that that any potential health risks are effectively controlled; this exposure can occur through inhalation, skin contact and ingestion during activities such as bagging, transferring and mixing of powders, spraying of liquids and machining.

HSE’s scientific expert in nanotechnology health protection, Dr Delphine Bard, was selected in 2013 by the World Health Organisation to provide support and expertise in the development of the new ‘Guidelines on Protecting Workers from Potential Risks of Manufactured Nanomaterials’.

Daniel Barrowcliffe

Meet the Service Manager

Daniel Barrowcliffe is the service manager for the Fibres and Minerals team.  The team offers asbestos identification and fibre counting as well as specialised techniques such as dustiness testing, transmission electron microscopy and respirable crystalline silica analysis.

Read a case study about fibre mats in catalytic converters.  They also run a number of proficiency testing schemes related to asbestos analysis.
