HSL Publication: Quantifying Dustiness, Specific Allergens, and endotoxin in bulk soya imports

HSL’s Allergen Monitoring and Fibres teams, together with collaborators at the Hospital Val’Hebron in Barcelona, have published a new article on soya. This article focuses on the differences between various imported soya bulks in both their intrinsic dustiness and capability to liberate major allergens on energetic handling using a standardised dustiness test. Follow this link to view the full article.

Dust from soya is a well-recognised cause of occupational asthma, allergy and lung irritancy and is imported in the UK in large quantities, principally as animal feed, although uses in the human food chain are increasing. The data presented shows wide differences between bulk samples, significant levels of endotoxin in some bulk samples and no simple relationship between levels of dust and allergen. Also pelletised material after transportation by containership may still be a dusty material. These findings reinforce the need to control exposure to dust and allergens from any soya bulk product to as low as reasonably practicable.

Solvents, also known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), are used in many products such as paints, thinners and glues.  Different solvents can affect your health in different ways from short-term (irritation, headaches) to chronic diseases and even acute fatalities.

Exposure monitoring via simple diffusive sampling or urine analysis can help ensure that your control measures are working. Urine sampling can be particularly useful if there is potential for skin absorption or where PPE is used.

There are guidance values available for the most common solvents, including MEK, MIBK and dichloromethane.

Additionally HSE publishes free guidance for those carrying out solvent degreasing, including advice about maintaining and cleaning the degreasing plant.
