Chemical Emissions Testing

New Technique for chemical emissions testing?

HSL has been investigating a new instrumental technique – SIFT-MS (Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry) in association with Anatune.  Over the course of a week, a number of applications were investigated: real-time multicomponent mixtures of standards from a calibration rig; volatile emissions from a 3D printer; chloramines from healthcare disinfectant scenarios; peracetic acid formation.  Some of the data from these experiments are now available in an application note.

TCT Show

Sam Hall will be presenting on “Occupational Exposure to Metal Powders in Additive Manufacturing” alongside Chris Ryall (Manufacturing Technology Centre) at the TCT Show (Birmingham NEC, 27 September).  Sam will present the results of a survey undertaken in collaboration with three additive manufacturing centres to investigate the effectiveness of control measures used to minimise operator exposure to metal powders. Exposures were assessed using personal sampling, real time emissions testing and surface deposition analysis. Contextual information about working practices and control processes was collected and reviewed and biological monitoring also assessed personal exposures.

9th International Workshop on Proficiency Testing, 9-12 October 2017, Slovenia

This international workshop - Proficiency Testing in Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine, organised by the Eurachem Proficiency Testing Working Group in association with EQALM and CITAC, will enable delegates (drawn from PT providers, accreditation bodies and laboratories) to come together to discuss a wide range of key issues across the three disciplines of analytical chemistry, microbiology and laboratory medicine. Owen Butler is a member of the scientific committee.  HSL proficiency testing, a member of the Eurachem PT WG, will be facilitating a working group discussion on “PT for sampling” and, together with our partners from LGC Standards, will present findings from our own AIR PT scheme

We love to hear from you!

Customer interaction and feedback is important to us – it enables us to better understand your requirements and, hopefully, ensures a high quality service.  In June we held a Customer Day at Buxton with technical updates on a range of topics (including diacetyl, biological monitoring, bioaerosol sampling, hearing conservation) plus the opportunity to chat to HSL’s specialists.  We also conducted our annual customer feedback survey in July (for those receiving reports in June).  We were praised for efficient turnaround, professional advice and a friendly service so many thanks to all who responded.  The idea of future Customer Days was popular so please email Kate Jones if you have particular topics you would like covered.  We will also be looking at the possibility of webinars.  Watch this space.
