HSL’s Sam Hall Presents…

Don't Panic! Practical Aspects of Infection Control

Sam Hall of HSL’s Measurement and Control team will be delivering a talk at the upcoming “Don’t Panic!” conference, which will explore evidence based evaluations of Category 4 PPE protection used for IDU and medical staff.

Sam will also be speaking at Airmon, focussing on the ‘charaterisation of particle and volatile organic compound emissions from desktop fused filament fabrication three dimensional printers using real-time analytical techniques’.  HSL plays a part as a co-organising institution to this international symposium, and you can find out more by following this link.

HSE Annual Science Review 2017:

Improving the Safety of Firefighters Breathing Apparatus

This research has provided valuable information to the fire service to enhance the safety of firefighters. The findings pointed to a potential buildup of moisture in the pneumatics of the breathing apparatus, which could potentially cause harm to those relying on this piece of equipment.

What does 'as low as reasonably practical' look like?

Exposure to carcinogens, mutagens, and respiratory sensitizers should be prevented or controlled to levels as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).

Judging what is reasonably practicable is the task of the occupational hygienist and one way is to benchmark exposure control across an industry or specific process within a workplace.  HSE have pioneered this in biological monitoring, using the 90th percentile approach.  We have recently published a paper outlining our thoughts in this area.
