Young workers' safety highlighted during National Apprentice Week

apprentice and mentor in workshop

National Apprenticeship Week (7- 13 February) is a timely reminder to make sure your young workers are receiving the training and supervision they need.

Apprentices are more likely to be new to the workplace and could be facing unfamiliar risks.

Remember that workers are as likely to have an accident in the first six months at a workplace as they are during the whole of the rest of their working life.

We've got a wide range of relevant guidance for on our young people at work website, including:

Farmer sentenced after walker is killed by cattle

A farmer has received a suspended prison sentence for safety breaches after an 83-year-old man was fatally attacked by cattle.

An investigation by HSE found that the victim was walking with his wife on a footpath which passed through the yard at the farm, following a right of way that runs from the farm down to the road.

The man and his wife were attacked by cattle that were grazing in the field with calves at foot. The victim was trampled and pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife sustained serious injuries.

Read this press release for more details on this incident.

25 workers were killed in 2020-21 as a result of being struck by a moving vehicle.

Our website has a vehicle and transport safety at work section with advice on how to help prevent accidents, by assessing and managing vehicle and driver safety – wherever you work.

There are also a wide range of resources relating to workplace transport.

HSE will be running a Site and Transport Safety training course on 21 April.

The course will help you understand the legal requirements of both road traffic law and workplace safety law, how and why things go wrong, and how you can take practicable steps to reduce risk in your business.
