Welcome to the Autumn edition of the TARGET newsletter! See below for the latest news and updates to the toolkit and events that may interest you.

The TARGET antibiotics toolkit is a suite of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) resources to support primary care clinicians to champion and implement AMS activities. The toolkit is developed by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and hosted on the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) website.

World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW)

18 - 24 November 2024

It's Day 2 of World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) and today's theme is Antimicrobials in clinical practice. Read on to see how you can use TARGET resources to get involved.

The theme for WAAW 2024 is “Educate. Advocate. Act now.”

Drug-resistant-pathogens pose a threat to everyone, everywhere. Yet, there is still much to be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness. This year's theme calls for stronger political leadership, advocacy and accountability to respond to AMR.

ESPAUR

National surveillance data has been published by the UK Health Security Agency, the English Surveillance of Antimicrobial Prescribing and Utilisation Report (ESPAUR) shows that the majority of antibiotic resistant bloodstream infections in the last 5 years (65%) were caused by E. coli – a common cause of urinary tract infections, diarrhoea, vomiting and fever.

You can also find information on antimicrobial stewardship, public and professional education in the report including TARGET activities in chapter 5 and chapter 7.

NEW Infographic: The TARGET Cycle of Antimicrobial Stewardship

The TARGET team have published a NEW infographic titled the Cycle of Antimicrobial Stewardship. This visual guide, designed with primary care professionals, aims to help visualise a whole-practice cyclic approach to antimicrobial prescribing. The infographic includes links to supporting resources at each stage of the cycle. The steps include:

IDENTIFY an area for improvement by measuring antimicrobial prescribing.
LEARN more about the identified area.
ACT using tools and resources to enhance patient interactions and support stewardship.
REVIEW the impact on prescribing practices.

This infographic can be a valuable resource for training sessions, displayed as a poster in your setting, or integrated into GP trainee programmes and staff appraisals.

Leaflets to discuss with patients

The TARGET Treating Your Infection leaflets for download have been updated following a review of the latest evidence and guidance, and through consultation with stakeholders including healthcare professionals and patients! Use these leaflets to support shared decision-making about the management of infections during consultations.

Future Learn Training Course

The TARGET Prescribing in Primary Care Future Learn course has recently been updated. The free course was designed to support primary care professionals to target the use of antibiotics to reduce antimicrobial resistance. Topics covered include:

Introduction to antimicrobial resistance in primary care
Prescribing in urinary tract infections
Assessing the need for antibiotics
Managing patient expectations and backup/ delayed prescribing
Common practice approach

This course was co-developed with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy and is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists.

Dr Donna Lecky, Head of the Primary Care and Interventions Unit

Donna has a background in microbiology research, programme management and resources development.

Emily Cooper, TARGET Programme Manager

Emily has a background in public health and nursing. She supports the management of the TARGET programme as well as national guidance and research around urinary tract infections.

Cath Hayes, TARGET Project Manager

Cath has a Master's in Public Health and is currently completing a PhD part-time focusing on antimicrobial stewardship for ear infections in primary care alongside her role as a Project Manager for the TARGET Antibiotics Toolkit.

Liam Clayton, TARGET Project Support Officer

Liam has a Master's in Sport and Exercise Science and is supporting with the development and update of TARGET resources and with research on urinary tract infections.

Jade Meadows, Research Programme Manager

Jade has a background in clinical trials and research management and is supporting the TARGET training roll-out and evaluation.

Emily Whitehorne, TARGET Research Assistant

Emily has a background in psychology and is currently studying for a Master’s in Public Health. She is supporting with projects on antimicrobial stewardship practices and is assisting with the development of TARGET resources.
