New indicators on premature mortality in adults with severe mental illness (SMI) – 1 December 2020

Two new indicators showing premature mortality in adults with severe mental illness have been published in the severe mental illness and mental health and wellbeing JSNA profiles.  They show variation at local authority level and between genders. Further details can be found below.

COVID-19: mental health and wellbeing surveillance report

The recently published COVID-19 mental health and wellbeing surveillance report has been refreshed with up to date data to week 38.  It includes 2 new Spotlights on gender and ethnicity.

Recent profile updates

Official statistics: suicide prevention profile update - 3 November 2020

The suicide prevention profile was updated with:

• three years of life lost due to suicide indicators at County and UA level (persons, males and females) in the suicide data domain for the period 2017 to 2019

New indicators on premature mortality in adults with severe mental illness (SMI) – 1 December 2020

Two new indicators were published in severe mental illness and mental health and wellbeing JSNA profiles at UTLA and England level for the period 2015 to 2017 for persons, male and female. The new indicators replace the previous indicator on excess under 75 mortality rate in adults with serious mental illness and they are:

• premature mortality in adults with SMI – this measures the absolute impact of mortality to help us understand where in the country people with SMI are at highest risk of dying early
• excess premature mortality in adults with SMI – this measures the local inequality in mortality to help us understand where in the country is the greatest difference in mortality between people with SMI and the rest of the population

The premature mortality rate in adults with SMI in England between 2015 and 2017 is:

• 91 per 100,000 for persons
• 108 per 100,000 for male
• 74 per 100,000 for female

Local data shows that the premature mortality rate in adults with SMI varies between:

• 48 and 181 per 100,000 for persons
• 56 and 231 per 100,000 for male
• 40 and 140 per 100,000 for female

The excess premature mortality rate in adults with SMI in England between 2015 and 2017 is:

• 355% for persons  - this means that adults with SMI are 355% more likely to die young than adults without SMI
• 356% for male and 363% for female

Local data shows that the excess premature mortality rate in adults with SMI varies between:

• 168% and 593% for persons
• 189% and 595% for male
• 158% and 655% for female
