Celebrating Deaf Awareness Week - 3 - 9 May 2021
We are celebrating Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) from 3 to 9 May 2021. DAW is a national event that aims to raise awareness of the deafness and hearing loss faced by one in six people in the UK and the importance of inclusion and accessibility. More than 10 million people in the UK have hearing loss, and by 2035, it’s estimated that this will increase to 15.6 million people.
The theme this year - ‘Coming Through it Together’, focuses on raising awareness of deaf issues and improving access to education, health, social care and employment for deaf people. It also highlights the importance of embracing and recognising language and culture, and improving the quality of services for the deaf community.
As the UK continues to live with the impact of COVID-19, this year’s campaign aims to raise awareness of deaf issues while focusing on positivity and togetherness as we gradually emerge from lockdown. Find out how you can get involved here.
If you are deaf or hard of hearing or are a carer for someone who is deaf there is lots of local support in Hounslow, visit the Care Place website to find out more.

Further bus strikes planned in May as the Council offers support
A bus strike is planned for Friday 7 May and Saturday 8 May affecting all of the borough. Normal services resume the day after the strikes at 6am on Sunday 9 May.
As previously, Hounslow Council is again offering assistance to motorists who have no other choice but to use their vehicles.
Drivers will be able to park in any on-street pay-to-park bay beyond the normal maximum 2 or 4 hour stay without further charge. This special arrangement will run on strike days between 8am until 8pm on Friday 7 May and Saturday 8 May 2021.
The Council recommends that if at all possible, residents plan not to travel on strike days, and if they have to travel, to check live travel information or that residents consider cycling or walking.

Character design workshop, help shape the future look of the borough
We are preparing an update to our 2014 Urban Context and Character, which includes proposing Design Codes for the borough in line with London and National policies. This updated study will play a crucial role in shaping future development to ensure that it is of high quality design and responds positively to our borough’s character. More information on the Character and Design Codes Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) can be found at our webpage.
Following the Character Area workshop that was held in March, we are holding a further engagement workshop on options for Design Codes on 12 May 2021 from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
The purpose of the workshop is for you to feedback on proposed area design codes and give your thoughts on any additional design codes that could be included in an SPD. We have put together an informative video to explain what design codes are, what they aim to do and how you can get involved.
The format of the workshop will begin with a short presentation explaining what design codes are and their purpose. We will then break out and spend more time in area based discussion groups to look at the proposed design codes for each of the areas. There will then be an extended period of discussion time to give feedback on the proposed options, propose alternative codes and come up with new codes that shape the future of your neighbourhoods. The draft design code document will be issued in advance of the workshop.
The area based discussion groups will be split into the following
- Bedfont, Feltham, Hanworth
- Central Hounslow
- Hounslow West, Heston and Cranford
- Isleworth and Osterley
- Chiswick
- Brentford
Places will be limited, as each group is capped at 15 people to ensure that discussion can take place and everyone can give their feedback.
Please email hounslow@alliesandmorrison.com by Thursday 6 May if you plan to attend, stating which area based group you would like to be involved in.
