In a speech at the opening of the legal year, Lord Chancellor, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice David Lammy announced this week funding for an extra 1,250 Crown Court sitting days.
This brings the total to 111,250 – up by 5,000 compared to last year, which will help Crown Courts to hear more cases this year.

The court will reopen on Monday 3 November 2025 following its closure to improve the site’s heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
The court closed temporarily at the end of November 2024 and hearings have been held in other courts across London during this time.

A new guide to help all users understand their own roles and responsibilities in the escort and custody process has been published by HM Prison and Probation Service.
The Prisoner Escort and Custody Services (PECS) guide provides specific guidance for court staff, as well as prison officers, police, probation services and others. It also makes it easier for anyone working in the justice system to understand the services they can expect PECS to deliver.
