Minister Heidi Alexander wrote an article for the News Media Association’s ‘Journalism Matters’ campaign this week. She explained her commitment to the principle of open justice and the essential role of the media in reporting from our courts and tribunals.
The importance of factual and accurate reporting was brought into sharp focus following the Southport attacks in July and the Minister acknowledged the vital role of the media in reporting on hearings from our courts.

Colleagues from Newport Civil and Family Court and our Courts and Tribunals Service Centre in South Wales were pleased to host a visit this week from Minister Alex Davies Jones, the Minister for Victims and Violence against Women and Girls and Lord Ponsonby of Shulbrede.
They received a tour of the facilities and met with our colleagues and judges to discuss our commitment to improving the justice system for vulnerable individuals.

Our courts and tribunals will temporarily close on various dates over the Christmas period.
The closure dates for this year are:
- Wednesday 25 December 2024
- Thursday 26 December 2024
- Friday 27 December 2024
- Wednesday 1 January 2025
Some magistrates’ courts will be open on 26 December 2024 and 1 January 2025, but for remand hearings only.

Next Thursday 7 November 2024, Leeds District Magistrates’ and Family Court is hosting an open evening from 4pm to 6:30pm. Students and other young professionals interested in a career in family law are welcome to come along and get involved.
Visitors will be able to watch a 'mock' family court hearing, speak to court staff and our justice partners and much more besides.
