Essential preparatory works using overnight lane closures at Fiveways are scheduled to start in July 2013.
Full reconstruction of the roundabout, including the surfacing works are scheduled for October 2013. From July to September 2013 there will be a series of overnight lane closures at the roundabout for five nights per week, 8pm to 6am. These closures will not affect any access to and from the roundabout.
Following this, there will be three weekends where traffic using Fiveways roundabout will be significantly disrupted, during this time the roundabout will be closed in three sections as shown on the attached drawing below.
Weekend 1
- Northbound closure of A11
- 10pm Friday 4 October - 6am Monday 7 October
- No access to/from or within area coloured green
Weekend 2
- Northbound closure of A11
- 10pm Friday 11 October - 6am Monday 14 October
- No access to/from or within area coloured blue
Weekend 3
- Southbound closure of A11
- 8pm Friday 18 October - 5am Monday 21 October
- No access to/from or within area coloured yellow
Details of diversion routes will be available in advance on our scheme website.
We have made significant progress from the beginning of the year. The scheme is on schedule with a huge amount of activity having taken place already clearly visible from the existing road.
Despite the extremely cold and wet weather we have experienced this winter, work is on schedule and since the clocks altered, work is taking place until 7pm to maximise the use of daylight.
Earthworks
Major earthworks have been taking place to construct the new section of dual carriageway and the new junctions.
River Lark
At the River Lark extensive work continues to take place on the new foundations of the new bridge. Installation of bridge beams is planned for late June.
B1112 underpass
Construction of the new bridge continues with installation of bridge beams planned for late June.
Road carriageway
The new sections of roads will be open in stages. Construction of a short section of the new carriageway adjacent to How Hill Tumulus is plannned to open to traffic in late June.
Utility diversions
The majority of the main utility diversion works are now complete, realignment of telecommunication services along the A11 are however still ongoing.
Roadworks safety initiative
In early April the Highways Agency organised a safety at roadworks exhibition for members of the press, television and radio as part of a wider national roadworks safety awareness week. The objective was to show how the scheme is addressing roadworker safety whilst demonstrating what safety systems are in place to protect the Public and road workers who work along side the live carriage.
We displayed safety measures such as solid metal barriers to separate road workers from live traffic and the introduction of a 40 mph speed restriction using variable signs to advise drivers of the speed limit. The event was a success and received positive coverage from local television, radio and local press.

The project team hold regular traffic clinics, involving key members from Suffolk and Norfolk County Council and the police, to ensure that all traffic management measures and disruption is kept to a minimum.
There is ongoing use of traffic management along the scheme. Plant crossing haul routes are in operation at various locations controlled by part time traffic signals daytime from 7am until 7pm. This allows material to be moved across the A11.
