Female students from across the borough have been taking part in inspiring events aimed at encouraging woman to play and work in sport.
Thirty girls, all aged between nine and 11 years old, from Kenilworth Primary School in Borehamwood, St Giles' Church of England Primary School in South Mimms and The Wroxham School in Potters Bar attended the Arsenal Training Ground for a girls football festival on Monday 3 June.
The aim of the day was to improve participation and enjoyment of football. The rules of the festival were simple: have fun, play hard, support each other, be kind and take risks.
Throughout the day no scores were kept, all verbal communication was positive and encouraging, the players managed their own games, and success was measured by what the girls wanted to achieve. It wasn't about winning and losing, but learning.
Young leaders from Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood, who recently completed their Junior Football Organisers Course, supported the event, organising teams and overseeing the matches.
In April, over 40 young people, aged between 12 and 15, from Bushey Meads and Queens' School both in Bushey attended the ‘Inspiring Females in Sport’ event.
The event, organised by Arsenal Women, aimed to increase the number of women and girls playing football, and increase the opportunities for females to develop skills and confidence to work as a player, coach or official.
During the day speakers included:
• Head of Marketing at the ICC Cricket World Cup • Lead Journalist at the Guardian Newspaper • Women’s National Development Manager at The Football Association • 1st Team Psychologist at Arsenal Women FC • 1st Team and Academy Physiotherapist at Arsenal Women FC
