New animal welfare legislation set to come into effect in Hertsmere

More people in Hertsmere may need to apply for licences under new animal welfare legislation

Hertsmere residents are being urged to check whether they need to apply for a new animal activity licence under wide ranging changes to animal welfare regulations, which are set to come into effect soon.

From 1 October, animal boarding businesses, including home boarders and day care, dog breeders, pet shops, riding establishments and anyone involved in the keeping of or training of animals for exhibition will have to apply for the single type of licence.

The new laws will replace older animal licensing acts and the 31 existing licence holders in the borough will need to apply for an animal activity licence.

However, there may be many more animal-related activities that need to be licensed under the new rules, including dog walking where the pet is being cared for at the dog walker’s home.

Failing to apply for a licence could result in an unlimited fine and/or six months imprisonment.
