The Mayor of Hertsmere led a poignant ceremony to remember the sacrifices of British military personnel as part of special events to commemorate Armed Forces Day.
Mayor Councillor Brenda Batten and Mayor's Consort John Batten were joined by Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress Cllr Alan Plancey and Miriam Plancey and Labour Leader Cllr Jeremy Newmark for the event held outside the Civic Offices, which was one of many ceremonies taking place across the country to show the nation’s support for the armed forces.
Representatives from charity the Royal British Legion (RBL) and different faiths were also present for the occasion on Monday, 25 June when the Armed Forces flag was raised outside the council’s Civic Offices in unison with other flags across the country.
The bugler, Adrian Temple, performed The Last Post and The Reveille, while Fred Grimes, an RBL representative, read the Exhortation and the Kohima Exhortation.
Following the flag raising, a one minute silence was held before the Mayor's Chaplain Father Andrew Burton read out the Armed Forces Prayer.
Armed Forces Day aims to raise public awareness of the contribution made by those who serve or have served in the armed forces.
