Things you need to know ahead of borough and county elections

Check you are registered to vote ahead of the deadline on Monday 20 April.

If you’re planning on voting at a polling station, check you have valid photo ID.

If you don’t have accepted ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on Tuesday 28 April by going to: gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate

If you plan to vote by post, you need to apply before 5pm on Tuesday 21 April. To apply, go to: gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

If you want someone to vote on your behalf (a proxy), you have until 5pm on Tuesday 28 April to apply for a proxy vote. To apply, go to: gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote

Renters’ Rights Act will come into effect on 1 May 

The legislation will see the end to 'no-fault' evictions and fixed-term tenancies. It will also limit rent increases to once a year, ban rental bidding and excessive advance rent payments and end discrimination against those on benefits.

The act applies to most private renters and landlords but does not usually apply to social housing or lodgers.

If you're a landlord, you'll need to make sure you understand the new rules for tenancy agreements and what's required of you. Before 31 May 2026, for all Assured or Assured Shorthold Tenancies, you must give your tenants a copy of the Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet.

Sign up to our Garden Waste Service

Spring is in the air and we are starting to enjoy some brighter, drier and warmer weather.

This is the perfect time to start spending more time tidying your garden. But have you thought about what you might do with all of your prunings, trimmings and cuttings?

You could benefit from signing up to our kerbside garden waste collection service.

Sign up and manage your garden waste subscription online. You can also view calendars for all scheduled waste collections.

You can manage up to three properties from one customer account.

Bank holiday bin collections

Bins across the borough will continue to be collected as normal during both bank holidays in May.

Monday 4 May and Monday 25 May are both bank holidays, and all collections of rubbish, recycling, and garden waste will remain the same.

For those taking part in the food waste pilot scheme, food waste collections will also remain the same.

Our crews start at 7am so please ensure your bin is ready for collection to avoid it being missed.

Food waste collections coming soon!

Delivery of ten thousand food waste caddies are now complete in the pilot area of the borough.

Weekly food waste collections start week commencing Monday 20 April on your usual bin day. Please place your food waste caddy alongside your recycling/domestic bin for collection.

If you are part of the pilot area, you would have already received your introduction letter, along with your caddies to recycle leftovers and unused food.
