Welcome to the December edition of our Recycling Newsletter. Each month we will provide you with hints and tips on how to waste less, and recycle right. |
|
Here’s what to do:
Unwanted but still in good condition?
✨Donate them to a charity shop or organise a decoration swap with friends — it’s a great way to spread festive cheer sustainably!
Broken and beyond repair?
🚮Pop them in your general waste bin for energy recovery.
🔋If they contain batteries or electrical parts, take them to your nearest electrical recycling drop-off point.

If you were lucky enough to get a chocolate advent calendar this year, remember to recycle the outer cardboard. The inner plastic tray can also be recycled at one of our plastic recycling bins.

You can wrap Christmas presents using alternatives like fabric, reusable bags, or even newspaper and brown paper for a rustic look.
Other creative methods include layering different papers, adding natural elements like foliage, or decorating with photos or homemade pom-poms.
You can also try tape-free wrapping techniques to make the packaging more recyclable.
|
Why not try making your own wreaths using natural materials from your garden or local area! When the holidays are over, you can compost them or pop them in your garden waste bin.
|
|
|
Shiny or laminated wrapping paper cannot be recycled.
Do the scrunch test! Scrunch your wrapping paper into a ball. If it stays scrunched, it should be recyclable, but if it opens out, it needs to go in your rubbish bin.

|
After the celebrations are over, don't forget that all your glass bottles and jars can be recycled, whatever shape or size. Just give them a quick rinse and take them to your nearest glass bank.

Greene King's ‘Tub2Pub’ - a recycling campaign to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and recycle plastics - has returned!
Last year, over 240,000 tubs were collected, raising £10,916 for Macmillan Cancer Support. With your help, we can beat that record in 2026!
From 1 January until 15 February 2026, its pubs, restaurants, and hotels will accept your clean and empty:
- Confectionery tub
- Biscuit tubs
- Cracker tubs
A collection point has now been set up at the Plaza (Civic Centre Road, Havant, PO9 2AX) until 9 January 2026. Feel free to pop in and drop off your tubs!

If you are subscribed to our garden waste collection service, Christmas trees can be chopped and recycled in your brown lidded bin. Chopped pieces should be no bigger than 3 inches / 7.5 centimetres in diameter.
If you are not signed up to our garden waste collection service, real trees can be recycled at a local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).
|
Some local organisations will also recycle your real tree, such as Rowans Hospice.
