Welcome to the October edition of our Recycling Newsletter. Each month we will provide you with hints and tips on how to waste less, and recycle right.
We are pleased to see how well used the new plastic recycling bins are across the borough. Residents can now recycle plastic pots, tubs, and trays at five designated sites.
Due to high demand, from October the collection frequency will increase to weekly, making it even easier for residents to recycle plastics conveniently and effectively.
We will continue to monitor the service closely and make improvements where necessary.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us recycle right.

There’s plenty of recycling to be done around Halloween and lots of ways you can reduce the scary amount of waste generated by the fearsome festivities:
🧵 DIY or swap your costume
Raid your wardrobe or visit a charity shop for pre-loved finds. Even better - organise a costume swap with friends!
🎃 Don't bin your pumpkin!
Use the leftovers to bake something delicious - think muffins, soup, or even dog treats!
🧙♀️ Make your own decorations
Toilet roll bats, paper garlands, and upcycled crafts make for spooky fun - and you can reuse them next year!
🍬 Recycle your wrappers
Most sweet wrappers can now be recycled at your local supermarket:

🐾 Donate It No compost bin? See if your local farm, zoo, or community garden is accepting pumpkin donations. Many animals love them as a seasonal treat!

Don’t risk a fine—protect yourself by following the S.C.R.A.P. code when disposing of waste:
♻️ Suspect all waste carriers. Always ask for their waste carrier licence. ♻️ Check they’re registered—use the Environment Agency’s tool. ♻️ Refuse unexpected offers to take your rubbish away. ♻️ Ask how your waste will be disposed of. ♻️ Paperwork is essential—get a proper invoice or waste transfer note.
Fly-tipping is illegal and could land you with a £1,000 fine or even prosecution.

🔧 Give your stuff a second life this #RepairDay!
Whether it’s a broken toaster, a wobbly chair, or a torn jacket—repairing instead of replacing helps reduce waste and saves money!
🛠️ From electricals to clothes, there are repair cafés across Hampshire where friendly volunteers can help you fix your items and learn new skills.
Contamination happens when non-recyclable items end up in your recycling bin. In Hampshire, this means anything that can’t currently be recycled locally.
✅ To keep recycling clean and effective, only put these items in your home recycling bin:
- Tins & cans
- Paper
- Card
- Plastic bottles
- Aerosols
🧼 Make sure everything is clean, dry, and loose — no bags or food residue!
