Happy New Year to you and welcome to the January edition of our Recycling Newsletter. Each month we will provide you with hints and tips on how to waste less, and recycle right.
Real trees are recyclable and, if taken to a local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), will be composted or shredded into ProGrow; a soil conditioner that can be reused in gardens.
If you subscribe to our garden waste scheme, we will collect your real Christmas tree on your scheduled collection day. We can only collect trees placed inside your bin, cut into pieces, no larger than 7.5cm in diameter, and 60cm in length.
Garden waste collections will resume on your usual collection day from week commencing Monday 6 January 2025. Please remember to remove non-organic material from natural door wreaths before putting them into your garden waste bin.
You can also recycle your Christmas tree hassle-free whilst raising much-needed funds for Rowans Hospice by signing up to their Christmas Tree Collection service.
Volunteers will collect your tree and send it to be recycled into wood chippings and mulch. Closing date to book your collection is Sunday, 5 January 2025.
If you have an artificial tree that you no longer need/use, these can be donated to some charity shops, hospitals, libraries, or schools.

Plastic sweet tubs cannot be recycled in your kerbside recycling bin.
As part of their ‘Tub2Pub’ recycling campaign to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and to recycle plastics, Greene King pubs, restaurants, and hotels will be accepting your:
- Confectionery tubs
- Biscuit tubs
- Cracker tubs
The tubs are recycled and sold to plastic manufacturers, and the money raised goes to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Make sure your tubs don’t go to waste, take your clean, empty plastic confectionery and cracker tubs to any Greene King managed site before Sunday 16 February 2025.
In support of this, Havant Borough Council will have a collection point in the Atrium of the Public Services Plaza, PO9 2AX until Thursday 13 February.

Did you know that not all plastics marked with a recycling symbol are recyclable?
After the festivities, follow these tips to recycle more and recycle right.
🎄Only paper wrap (like brown paper) can be recycled (remove sticky tape). Most gift wrap with plastics, glitter, or foil cannot be recycled.
🎄 Metal tins, flattened cardboard, plain cards and envelopes can go in your green lidded recycling bin – (removing tape, cellophane, and wire or plastic fasteners).
🎄 Broken Christmas tree lights and electrical decorations can be recycled through electrical waste drop off points or at any HWRC.
❗Batteries and vapes - Use special drop-off points at local shops, supermarkets, or HWRCs.

Many batteries – including rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries – are small, and can be found in household items, including toys, toothbrushes, phones, e-cigarettes, vapes and laptops.
Batteries should never be disposed of in your household rubbish or recycling bin. When batteries get damaged they may explode or ignite, which can pose serious risks to property and personal safety.
We’re asking residents to dispose of their used batteries responsibly. Small electronic devices are accepted at all HWRCs and special containers are also available at the sites for removed batteries.
Large retailers like supermarkets that sell batteries will also have containers for the recycling of used batteries.
