THINGS TO MAKE YOU THINK - Jude Williams,The Hackney Pirates

Things to make you think is a talk series brought you by Hackney Council. Originally set up for staff members to help with their professional development, the Council has opened the series up to benefit employees or business owners from Hackney. The talks are free but you will need to declare the business you work for to attend.

Jude Williams is the Chief Executive of The Hackney Pirates - who make a transformative impact on the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people aged 9 to 13 years old who are both falling behind at school and have fewer advantages in their personal circumstances.

THE TALK - 4th April 2018

Jude will talk about Community Organising: How Obama became President of the United States. Many people talk about empowerment and giving a voice to those who are disenfranchised, but how do you use that voice to speak to power; how do you influence those who seem to be most in control?

At the heart of community organising is the coming together of individuals in communities, organised around shared goals. The community organisers role is to mobilise the collective in purposeful action to challenge power and create a change.
