Child Neglect Training

The purpose of this course is for participants to:-

1. Recognise the impact of neglect on the developing child

2. Outline the range and types of neglect and how to respond to these

3. Compare different levels of neglect and how they relate to Gloucestershire’s Levels of Intervention 

4. Use the Neglect Toolkit to inform a multi-agency response

5. Use the Escalation Policy if you are concerned about a professional's response to your concerns

Child Exploitation (CSE & CCE) & Missing

The purpose of this course is for participants to:-

To understand and act upon concerns regarding children and young people at risk of or experiencing abuse through sexual and / or criminal exploitation and when CYP go missing.

1.      Explain the elements and types of Child Sexual and Criminal Exploitation

2.      Recall the factors and risk indicators that may make a child vulnerable to exploitation

3.      Know when and how to complete the Child Exploitation (CE) screening tool

4.      Develop an understanding of the national and local developments in these areas, including the lessons learnt and best practice

5.      Understand the push and pull factors in when CYP go missing. 

Child Protection Inter Agency (CPIA) Level 3

The purpose of this course is for participants to:- 

1.    Consider the wide range of issues that are covered in child abuse and neglect. (Examine the many ways in which children and young people can be harmed and abused and consider the wide range of issues associated with such incidents.)

2.    Understand the role of all agencies, including your own, to work together to safeguard children and young people.

3.    Develop an understanding of the local and national child protection process and legal framework.

4.    Consider the impact of personal and professional attitudes on effective investigating, assessing and decision making.

All of these courses consist of pre-reading and listening tasks plus an online course led by an experienced trainer and count towards CPD hours. New dates are added monthly so please check back regularly.

Each delegate MUST create their own account on MeLearning and register for courses in their own name to receive a certificate of attendance. Please do not join a different session to the one you have booked which will result in you being asked to leave the session.

Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse

New resources to identify concerns of child sexual abuse

The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse has created a series of 12 short films to accompany their practitioner guides, to give professionals the knowledge to identify concerns of child sexual abuse, and the confidence to respond to the abuse, and work with the child and their family.

Summary of risk factors and learning for improved practice around harmful sexual behaviour

Published case reviews since 2018 highlight that harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) should be recognised as a potential indicator of abuse and that sometimes this can be challenging for professionals to recognise and respond to.

Professionals such as practitioners or those who work in foster care or education, should work together to look for the reasons behind a child's behaviour, provide them with tailored support and consider appropriate safeguarding responses.

The learning emphasises the importance of: 

• all adults working or volunteering with children being trained to recognise and respond to abuse and neglect
• using a child-centred approach that considers the complex needs and individual lived experiences of all children and families involved
• carrying out holistic, multi-agency assessments that assess the different needs of children and take wider contextual information into account.

As part of the research for this NSPCC briefing the Serious Case Review ‘Children of Family Y’ undertaken in Gloucestershire was used. Here is a link back to that report Children of Family Y
