TALC intervention prevents at risk pupils being permanently excluded
All pupils at imminent risk of permanent exclusion from school have seen their situation improve after TALC (Team Around the Locality Cluster) involvement, new figures have revealed.
TALC is a multi-agency approach to supporting schools, giving them an open forum to refer their concerns to, for pupils with unmet Educational needs in the Early Intervention arena.
New data shows that those children with an imminent risk of permanent exclusion, had all seen their likelihood of exclusion reduce within the first 12 weeks of TALC involvement.
Figures also show that the work of TALC reduced the risk of suspension, risk of a pupil being placed on an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), risk of reduced attendance, and the overall level of concern for the pupil reduced in the opinion of the referring education professional.
- 100% of pupils with an imminent risk of suspension saw likelihood reduce in the 12 weeks after TALC intervention
- 70% of pupils at imminent risk of escalation to EHCP saw likelihood reduce in the 12 weeks after TALC intervention
- 40% of pupils with an imminent risk of reduced attendance saw likelihood reduce in the 12 weeks after TALC intervention
The figures relate to children and young people that have competed the initial 12-week period of TALC intervention.
Schools can refer individual pupils who are experiencing barriers to education and are currently accessing support at Level 3 of our locally agreed Levels of Intervention to the TALC programme by contacting talc@gloucestershire.gov.uk, or 01452 427 434.
The newly launched Intervention Circle receives Level 4 referrals from Gloucestershire County Council services and commissioned partners when there are educational concerns over a child or young person that is already receiving a statutory response. This forum extends the continuum of support available for Gloucestershire’s children and young people who experience barriers to education.
Schools may be invited to be a part of the Intervention Circle in the spirit of a multi-agency response. However, schools cannot refer direct to the Intervention Circle, and instead should discuss concerns over any individuals to the allocated team, service or professional.
