Upcoming road closures - May

Footway along A40 Gloucester Road is closed until 31 May - Closure of North side footway between Telstar Way and the Benhall Roundabout Bus Stop. Please see A40 Gloucester Road footway closure plan (PDF, 545.7 KB) for details of closure and diversion routes.

4 - 21 May: there will be a variety of closures on A40 Westbound lanes and Hatherley Lane overnight 7pm – 6am:

• A40 (5 - 7 and 10 - 14 May): Westbound lanes from Arle Court roundabout to M5 Junction 11. This is a full closure and a diversion will be in place.
• Hatherley Lane (4 - 5 and 17 - 21 May): Between Arle Court roundabout and B&Q roundabout. Access from B&Q roundabout to businesses maintained.

Scheme update Lots has been happening on site at the Arle Court roundabout end of the scheme.  On the roundabout itself, surfacing works are complete to the main gyratory following night closures March/April, and the majority of new lining has been installed.

At Hatherley Lane, the northbound works are largely complete and the final section at the compound entrance is being worked on at present. Southbound works have started with new kerbs being installed, moving into the centre island this week. Upcoming works here include surfacing and lighting.

On the A40 Westbound widening works have been completed. White lining is being carried out and traffic will be switched to a new alignment other than at Badgeworth Bridge this week to allow the new centre reserve to be completed. Works to Badgeworth Bridge are ongoing. 

On the A40 Eastbound works to Badgeworth Bridge are ongoing with centre reserve works coming up which include removal of the safety barrier.

On the B4063 arm, road widening works are complete other than final surfacing. Upcoming works here include footpath/cycleway upgrades. Cyclists will need to dismount for a short section while the existing footway/cycleway is upgraded. Look out for signs nearby. 

Subway works are progressing well. On the North Subway, the north east wall and pre-cast copings are complete with carriageway widening works underway. The copings are the decorative stone on the out side on the wall. The north west wall is also complete, with work on the copings ongoing. There is more to do on the safety barriers and footway/cycleway here. 

Please note the planned overnight closures above - we are steadily moving towards completing this section of the scheme and as always we are grateful for your ongoing patience. 

Further down towards Cheltenham, the retaining wall within GCHQ car park is 50 per cent complete.

Telstar Way junction improvements are under way, with site clearance complete in the central reserve and kerbing works progressing. Temporary traffic lights have been installed to allow works to continue on the new traffic signals installation which is 25 per cent complete.

Between Telstar Way and Benhall roundabout, the temporary diversion of traffic into the central reservation is complete. Widening works to Benhall roundabout has started this week too.

COVID-19 position

As Gloucestershire moves between different levels of Coronavirus restrictions, we want to reassure you that we are working with our highways contractors in Gloucestershire to protect all staff, following updated government and industry guidance regarding COVID-19 and construction work. 

We will continue to make progress with the West Cheltenham Transport Improvement Scheme using the principles of social distancing, bubbles and working remotely.
