Scheme update

24 December 2020

Next stage will start on 4 January 2021

As you may already know, the West Cheltenham Transport Improvement Scheme is split up into a few different sections.

The second section will start to be built in January 2021. This includes:

  • Arle Court to Gloucester Road/Lansdown Road junction eastbound carriageway improvements (towards Cheltenham town centre)
  • Improving access for cyclists between Arle Court roundabout and Benhall roundabout
  • Telstar Way widening to Hubble Road
  • Benhall Roundabout remodelling including eastbound widening
  • Cycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements from Arle Court to Cheltenham Railway Station

We will share more information and maps in the new year.

If you need to get in touch with us about any upcoming work please email majorprojects@gloucestershire.gov.uk and the team will be able to help.

Construction update

We continue to make progress with the first part of the West Cheltenham Transport Improvement Scheme. You should now be able to see some significant changes around the site. Thank you for your patience so far with the scheme.

The site will be quiet over Christmas and all the roads will stay open for the winter break.

A40

Work such as kerb laying and drainage improvements on A40 eastbound have continued this month.

Westbound on the A40, work to divert utilities like phone lines and power cables are nearly complete. We are widening the road here and improving the Arle Court Park and Ride slip road. Soon you will be able to leave the park and ride site to join the A40 without using Arle Court roundabout.

We hope the works in this area will be complete by February 2021.

Arle Court Roundabout

Over the next few weeks we will continue to install new bases for traffic signals around the roundabout.

There is a new drone video fly-though of the site available on our YouTube channel.

Diversions for statutory utility providers (gas, broadband and electricity) have been completed. Excavation works for the new bus and cycle lanes have started here.

Hatherley Lane

We would like to thank the residents on Hatherley Lane for your understanding and patience while we have been diverting utilities within the area. We know these works have caused you disruption, and we appreciate your support and understanding.

Recently there were problems with a burst water main nearby which flooded the subway. Pedestrians and cyclists were given a lane on the road so they could safely continue their journey. Unfortunately this meant traffic was down to one lane in places, and we want to apologise for any inconvenience caused while Severn Trent fixed the issue.

In January work will carry on to construct the new footway, complete the road widening, and install kerbs.

Subway

The subway extension is nearly finished with the walls and concrete deck now visible from the temporary footpath. Drainage works are complete too, and retaining walls will be constructed in the new year.

Future road closures

We want to share some information in advance about possible road closures in January 2021. We will share more information nearer the time. We understand that these works may cause you disruption and we thank you for your patience and understanding. Our aim, as always, is to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible so that we cause the least disruption to your daily lives and sleep.

  • w/c 11 January - there will be a lane closure (for one week) on Telstar Way southbound. This is to create an access into the car park.
  • 12 January - from Tuesday night, traffic management will be installed on the Telstar Way junction with the A40.
  • 12 and 13 January - A40 Eastbound night closure between Arle Court Roundabout and Benhall Roundabout
  • 14 and 15 January - A40 Westbound night closure between Benhall Roundabout and Arle Court Roundabout
  • w/c 24 January:
    • Fiddlers Green Lane (1 night)
    • B4063 (2 nights)
    • Hatherley Lane (2 nights)

In addition, during the last week in January, we might need to close A40 eastbound to remove some barriers.
