Highways England closure starting 13 July

M5 J10 to J11 Staverton over bridge refurbishment (located on B4634)

Highways England operates, maintains and improves England’s motorways and major A roads. They’re also responsible for bridges and structures which cross their roads.

Highways England and Gloucestershire County Council are working together to upgrade the infrastructure and improve pedestrian and cyclist connectivity in this area. As part of this package, Highways England will shortly begin works on the Staverton over bridge, which is located on the B4634 and carries traffic over the M5 between junctions 10 and 11. Later in the year, Highways England will begin work on M5 J11 gyratory bridge at Golden Valley - further details will be available nearer the time.

The works
Parts of the bridge have reached the end of their life and need to be refurbished to keep road users safe. The works will include:

  • Removal and reconstruction of parapet edge beams
  • Full parapet and adjacent safety fencing replacement
  • Replacement of expansion joints
  • Localised concrete repairs
  • Remove existing run-on slabs
  • Re-waterproof and re-surface carriageway and footway deck

Start: 13 July 2020
End: August 2021
Hours of work: The majority of works will be carried out during daytime hours.

Traffic management: To ensure the safety of workers and the public, a 24/7 closure will be in place for the entirety of the works. Locally signed diversions will be in place via the B4634 and A4019 to the northeast of the bridge; and via the B4063 and A40 to the southwest. Please note, traffic management may be in place at Arle Court roundabout as described above.
