Elective Home Education in Gloucestershire

Parents must secure a suitable education for their children; but this does not have to be at school. In line with national trends, we have seen a rise in Gloucestershire in the number of children and young people who are educated at home and we know that a parent’s decision to educate their child at home, rather than at school, can be informed by a variety of factors.

Gloucestershire County Council has a duty to identify, as far as is reasonably practical, children in the area who may not be receiving a suitable education. Many parents approach home education very effectively, but some families find this less easy to do.

Our Education Inclusion Service liaises with all families who educate their children at home with particular focus on parents who need more support – either in helping them provide a quality education at home or helping them to find a school place for their child and supporting that transition if needed. We are also able to offer information to parents who are considering home education so they can make the best decision for their child.

In light of new guidance from the Department from Education, we have updated our information available on the Elective Home Education pages of the Gloucestershire County Council website.

For further advice and guidance, please contact the Education Inclusion Service by e-mailing us on ehe@gloucestershire.gov.uk or calling 01452 426015.
