Young Double Bass player, Charles Campbell Peek, has written about his  journey from playing Rugby to performing with many orchestras including the Essex Youth Orchestra, alongside musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Support for Secondary School Music Teachers 


Working as a Head of Music or music teacher in a secondary school can sometimes be quite a lonely existence with a wide range of demands and expectations on your time plus your ability to teach a range of genres and instruments.

Essex Music Education Hub offers quadrant network meeting and also funding to support collaboration between schools. Find out more on our website.

Next meeting is for the South Quadrant Secondary School Network Meeting and takes place in Rayleigh on 3rd February 2020.

Focus on Epping Community Music Centre


Essex Music Service runs a network of community music centres throughout the County where young musicians of any experience can play together in bands, music groups and sing in choirs.

In this newsletter we highlight our Epping Forest Community Music Centre where parents have described "the passion for teaching music is infectious”.

Good news from the Saffron Centre for Young Musicians. Congratulations to its member, Lewis Isaacs, who has not only reached the percussion category final for BBC Musician of the Year (watch him on  BBC 4 on 6th May) but also Young Drummer of the Year.

Did you know that we have String Music Groups for all abilities?  We have groups for open strings, Grade 2 - 4 and Grade 4 - 8. Find out more about the groups, scholarships and available bursaries on our website.

Royal Opera House's Create & Sing comes to Essex


Create and Sing offers free training and resources, enabling teachers to explore and create opera in the classroom.

Teachers develop skills in singing, drama, storytelling, characterisation and music. No musical training is required.

Meadowsong - the power of song. Free CPD Day


Through the power of song and connected learning, Meadowsong aims to give teachers the opportunity to support biodiversity in creative and active ways.

The free CPD day supports primary teachers (Yr3) to stage a musical performance, plant a mini meadow, and deliver a programme of classroom and outdoor learning in the summer term culminating in a performance of the songs. Further information and to register your school

Our first of five free CPD Courses - Preparing for an Ofsted Deep Dive in Music for Primary Schols - took place on Thursday 23rd January, and was led by Sarah Goldsmith, our Schools' Curriculum Support Officer.

Practical skill progression - a free twilight CPD taking place in Benfleet on 2nd March 2020. Focusing on practical skills in assisting to perform, explore and create music with pupils.

Charanga and O-Generator CPD Training - these are free to all schools who have a current subscription to our E-Learning Package.

On Friday 31st January, the Essex Youth Jazz Quintet and Sextet perform in Chelmsford and over at Marigold's in Harlow the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform on Sunday 1st March.

My Band

My Band is a fantastic song writing, playing, performing, two-day holiday course for 11 to 18 year olds.Find out about the next course taking place on 19th and 20th February in Brentwood.

Essex Symphony Orchestra invites young musicians to workshops playing side-by-side with its experienced players under the directorship of its new professional conductor, Robert Hodge. This takes place on Sunday 2nd February.

Sound and Music Summer School 2020 applications are now open!  This week-long residential course for 14 - 18 year old helps develop musical creativity.

Applications for the National Youth Jazz Collective's Summer School are now open! The auditions take place from 21st March - 17th April across the country. Find out more by clicking on the title above.

Brass Academy's Easter and Summer Courses Find out about the specialist tuition for brass players aged 8 - 18 from Grade 1 - 8 to Diploma ability. Full details of the courses are available at

Young Composers Award 2020  The National Centre for Early Music Award is now open to young composers up to the age of 25. Composers are invited to create a new polyphonic work for an unaccompanied choir.
